What are your thoughts on the bakflips g2 vs f1. I've never had one but I know they come highly rated they are just expencive. I have a leer cap on my current ram but don't want to go that rote on the new truck hate the loss of visibility and being able to put large items in it.

salt in the wound! LOL

All good. I even went with a G2 again on my '10.....but I love the idea of the Roll X now......

No experience with the Bakflip, but I hear they're good. I have an Extang and love it. It's very similar to the Bakflip, but does have a few differences. Both covers are hard folding covers so both are pretty secure, and durable. The Bak covers, from what I've seen, are a smooth black finish, so the previously mentioned acorns or hail will make noticeable marks. The Extang tend to be a textured black finish so it's less likely to show those marks, though some will prefer the look of a smooth cover rather than a textured ones. Much like the choice between G2 and F1, Extang have several options (Solidfold, Encore, etc) so I may be making more variables for you. Something to consider though so you're not just looking at one brand. I think they're all priced about the same so it's not a decision you want to just leap into.
FWIW, mine is the Solidfold which has no rails or anything. Install is seriously a matter of securing 2 clams with wing nuts at the cab end, and 2 clamps with springs on the tailgate end. The entire cover can be installed or removed in less the 5 minutes by 1 person with no tools. In the end I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them. They're expensive but IMO very much worth it, compared to the crappy canvas covers I've had back in the day.

Here's the best picture I have of it on my computer. It's from when I tinted the 3rd brake light on my '07, but it gives you a good look at the finish on the cover.

Bakflips are also textured. Atleast my G2 I had in my '11 was. I like the low profile design of the bakflip over yours though for sure. Bakflip takes about 20-30min to install and like the capability of still being able to use your entire box. Probably can't go wrong with either bran just comes down to personal preference. If I were you, OP I'd go with the F1. If I could choose it'd be the F1 as well as my G2 did dent very easily.

I have had both, F1 for sure. The G2 was nice, but it gets HOT in the sun and will dent from hail. My G2 went thru 3 hail storms, showed very little damage, couple of small dents but it bugged me 'cause I knew they were there. The F1 isn't that much more and I am happy I "upgraded" this time around.

@Shots, how does that fold up feature work on your cover? To clarify, on my F1 there is a small strip maybe 6 or 8 inches wide at the very front that does not fold up. The other 3 panels come together and hinge at the rear side of that strip. Therefore, putting large items in the bed will not allow you to slide them flush to the front of the bed without removing the cover (which is expected, but my main issue with this follows). The one thing that annoys me about the F1 is how, when folded all the way, I don't feel there is adequate protection or locking hinge structure to keep the top from flopping forward and damaging the rear window, as the panels will fold and lean forward to the window if you let them. They have little support rods to prop the panels full open from the bed side, but I have been too concerned about the panels coming forward under braking (or strong wind from behind) that I have just removed the whole thing any time I have the bed full enough to have all 3 sections folded up. I do this to avoid potential damage to my back glass.

Your top appears to fold at the very front of the bed. Is that correct? Or do the back 2 panels fold and lay on the one closest to the cab?

These are things the OP should also consider (I did not, and while happy with the F1, wish I'd paid more attention to this when looking - maybe somebody else has something better, I don't know). They all look good/great when folded flat. But how well do they work when you actually need to open them up and get access to your bed?

The back 2 panels fold and lay on the one closest to the cab. If you want to haul an item flush against the bulkhead you can remove the entire cover by loosening 2 wing nuts, and lifting the entire cover off so you don't have that 6-8 inch strip in the front to deal with. Install is just as fast an easy.

I like the flush look of the other models too but I am a bit partial to the function of this cover. Other covers I've had that flush mount tend to let some moister into the bed. It may be because those were canvas covers, or it may be just the nature of the beast. My Solidfold keeps the bed dry. I also like that the quick removal/install makes it a breeze to gain access to 100% of the bed. I can haul an appliance flush to the cab, with straps pulling it tight to front and floor with no gap where it is against the cover's mounting plate. When I have something like that I simply remove the cover and set it (folded so it's compact) in the bed with the item I'm hauling. If I'm getting dirt/gravel/mulch I'll just leave the cover at home.

Another model to consider is the Encore. It's basically my cover but the front panel will fold back toward the tailgate with the rear 2 panels still latched down. So you can access anything that is in the very front of the bed without crawling into the bed or folding the cover up to the front.

Oh, and 1 more thing I like, is that Extang are made in America. :gr_patrio It's nice to find a product made in the U.S.A.

Another BakFlip VP User

I installed the Bakflip VP on my truck also. The panels are made out of fiberglass and will support 250 lbs +. I don't know if they will dent but I doubt it. I have a 2012 with Ram Boxes and the VP works out pretty nice. It sure stays dry and is easy to open and close. You just have to make sure some idiot doesn't try to slam the tailgate closed with the cover in place, because it will damage the last panel. I just open the last panel and set it on the locking plates and then close the tailgate. Then I lift up the last panel about 6 inches, drop it, and it locks into place.

So you can't open and close the tailgate with the VP cover locked down? That doesn't seem right. I don't think I've heard this with any other Bakflip so I doubt it's a brand specific thing. Is it just due to the design of the VP, or is it because you've got the Rambox?

Bakflip sent a yellow "caution" sticker with my F1 that can be put in the bed/on the top that warns against closing the tailgate with the back panel locked in place. The F1 is designed where there is a rubber flap that goes all the way around the top to help seal it from water. Repeated closing of the tailgate with the back panel locked in the closed position could cause damage to that flap. I've forgot and closed the gate with the top down, and it definitely hits the gate in a manner that I didn't like. It didn't damage it that I can tell from that one instance, but I would not recommend making a habit of closing the tailgate with the (F1) top fully in place. It's a mild annoyance to simply lift that back panel a few inches, close the gate, and let the panel drop/lock.

It is due to the fact that there is a rubber seal that goes across the top of the tailgate. and when the tailgate is open that seal drops maybe a quarter of an inch. If you try to close the tailgate without lifting the panel is will slam right into the seal. There is a big warning sticker on the backflip to remind you. Nothing to do with RamBox.

its the only thing I don't like about mine...........but I've had them on 2 trucks, 5 years - I've learned to live with it AND tell anyone who gets into my tailgate....so they don't jack it up.
