Rear band strut keeps falling out on bench

I'm reassembling my 46RE and the rear band strut keep falling out as I move the transmission around on bench(it's upside down with pan off). I used the Transgo adjustment method of tightening with small wrench and backing off 2.5 turns. You can see in the pic that its barely sitting behind the rotating thingy. New kevlar band...the rocker pieces were not removed from case.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

-Travis

2 1/2 turns is too much. i've heard transman state he torques to 74-72 inch pounds then only backs off 1 1/2 turns on both bands.

No! 1 1/2 turns on the front band ONLY, 2 1/2 - 3 turns on the rear. Did you take ALL of the band linkage out? It looks like you have that center piece in wrong. If it is in there right, there are two different styles of rear bands. one takes a shorter strut than a normal (I don't know why they made such an animal) post a pic farther away so i can see what the linkage layout it and measure the length of your strut and post it.

Look at this pic and compare.

Unfortunately, I don't have an inch-lb torque wrench, and not sure what it'd feel like. I'll play with getting as close as I can to that and see if it's still falling out. Thx!

I tightened it up and it still falls out with minor wiggling of the band. I stripped the tranny down again leaving only the rear drum to verify the band was properly seated on the other end, and it is. It's as if the band is too short, the friction material is too thick effectively shortening the band, or the strut is too long. I just cant imagine that most of the strut is supposed to be below the rocker like in the picture. Any other thoughts?

Did you get this figured out?

Yes I did. Thank you for the pic. I pulled the drum and band to take a pic of the reaction lever as I'd have sworn it didn't have the pocket near the guys index finger in the pic. Anyway, once I those parts out and got my eyeball and camera down low enough tosee the underside, I found this great little pocket for the band strut to fit into. Boy did I feel stupid!!!

Bunch of stupid issues since, and life getting in the way so hadn't sent an update. It wouldn't start a couple nights ago. My best guess is melting snow ran down windshield and got something wet. Started right up next morning but snow in driveway was rock hard and it was stuck in 2wd and wouldn't move. This morning I broke 3 out of 4 bolts pulling actuator off front axle. Lever engages axle when transfer case in 2wd and disengaged when in 4wd, consistently. So, I reassembled, put in 2wd(locking axle), pulled actuator out of axle, engaged 4wd on transfer case and drove thru snow into garage couple hours ago. Old tranny should be out tonight and rebuilt tranny in tomorrow...

Thanks again for the help. Rest of rebuild was pretty smooth, so I'm optimistic it'll just work :)

Put 10 miles on it last night and all seemed well. P1762 and P1764 this morning. Generally seems to be working, but isn't downshifting to 1st from second at WOT, just holds at 2500rpm. I put a tfod-hd2 in it back in '04, but it never left the driveway after that, so the shift kit install could be related.

Where to start?

Update: put around 20 miles on truck running errands and noticed partway thru it was now downshifting. I cleared the codes and put another 15 miles on without a code. Hoping it was all just a chunk of junk in valvebody that's now been pushed thru... 150 mile trip planned for tomorrow, that'll be the real test
