Oil Filter Stuck

Hey all, so I was changing the oil in my truck today and everything was going swimmingly until I started to take off the filter. My filter wrench put a huge dent in it, so I tried my other filter wrench, just dented it in a different place. So I tried the filter wrenches with sand paper, nada. So at this point I am getting frustrated, so I tried the screwdriver method, a bit crude, but I figured it would work, it just tore the filter in half. Now I am down to the base part of the filter [the part with the holes in it, don't know the technical name for it], and I don't know what to do, I never imagined that a filter could get so stuck, every other time sandpaper works. Any thoughts?

If you are down to the base of the filter you should be able to see some holes in it. You may be able to fashion a "spanner" wrench. Or even use a large set of needle nosed pliers. There isn't really anything behind the plate to hurt by doing this. Just stick the ends of the pliers in and take something and start twisting.

Good luck...

Didn't thin about trying to use needle nose pliers. I will try that tomorrow, I gave up for the night, I was getting too frustrated with it and I don't want to break anything.

X2 if you could not break with good oil filter wench, will not get enough behind the neddle nose plyers,,,

I had this happen also. I just used a screwdriver and a hammer to beat off the end of the filter useing the holes in it.

I have been trying this to no avail. I will work on it more tonight, I'll try the pliers then tap some more, but I just seems to be "cutting" a hole in it with the screwdriver. I may need to make a tool to get it off.

It's a Mopar performance filter, and my wife changed the oil last time because I was still deployed. she swears that she lubed it and only hand tightened it, I'm getting more skeptical haha.

The ONE time I had the oil changed in a shop, I could barely get it off the next time I did it. I will never let anyone touch my truck again. Not saying this is what happened to the OP, just saying I hate oil shops.

So I tried the needle nose pliers, and not only did it not work, but I cut the hell out of my finger on some of the remaining metal filter housing. I decided to just go buy the stuff to make a tool.

Hey if you make a good one you could put a patent on it!!!Call it the get the rest of your darn filter off removal tool!!!

remove brace might give better angle,,wounder if 4x4 socket with tabs will match the holes in filter

That brace is freaking ON there. I don't have a breaker bar so I couldn't get it off. I made the tool, but I need to make a cross bar so it stabilizes itself, it keeps trying to rotate off right now. When i get it done I'll try it by hand then crack it with a hammer a few times if I can't get it off, I have no idea what to do after that if it won't come off.

My filter was WAY to tight the first time i did my truck lol, they can be that tight!

I had the exact same thing happen, just i ended up using a torch, WD-40, and an air hammer to get the base off. That tool is a beauty, good thinkin!!!!

I felt cool for making a tool that actually works, most of the time my makeshift tools break, haha.

For future reference, ALWAYS slide the oil filter wrench up to the base of the filter before you put any torque on it. That way it grabs the strongest part of the filter instead of collapsing it. Another thing to do is grab the base (before or after filter destruction) with a large channel locks.

I always try to get it to the base, but sometimes I can't get the right angle on it.
