Long crank time - reflash?

Just bought a 2006 Ram with 5.9 cummin, 6sp manual. Truck is immaculate with super low mileage (35K), runs great.

My only problem is it take 5-8 cranks to start. Sometimes it helps to turn key to run 1st, wait a couple sec (put on seat belt) then crank. But that doesn't always works.

I see there's a "TSB 18-003-06: Long Crank When Starting And/Or Transmission Shift" for this long crank issue which requires a reflash and my truck does match the manufacture date range. Of course I have no idea if prior owner ever did this reflash.

I was also wondering if the OEM lift pump is good, so I did install a Edge monitor and it's showing 9 psi at idle and never dips under 5psi. From what I see online that's normal for cp3 model. I can't really tell if the pump is running before crank either.

What's the best way to handle this? Just go to dealer and ask them to reflash with the latest for this model? or give them this specific TSB and have them do just that. I'm assume truck is out of warranty so they'll charge just for labor I guess?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Do you lose pressure over time when its parked?

I suppose a reflash would not hurt anything if you have not had it done but I would dig a little deeper into it before I hedge my bet on that alone.

try a diff key. I was about to look deeper and take my injectors out and tested one at a time cause i knew my pumps were good. I tried something simple, and ive been good since.

@bobman0627 when you say crank do you mean your turning the key and shes trying to turn over OR... your turning the key 5 times and nothing?

time to time mine will takes 4secs to crank over. On cold starts it seems to happen and I noticed after a fuel filter change it started like this.

@byrdawg13
Being that I only have 1key... which I need to get another I have no idea how this would help with the crank rather then good luck and I wish I had some hahaha

Yeah, I tried another key and it does start with fewer cranks the three times I tried it. I'll use this other key for a while and see if it continues to hold up. Any thoughts to why a different key matters?

@rootkit. I mean it turns over several time (healthy speed) and won't start. Once in a while I do have the other problem of not turning over when I turn the key, but I know that's related to the clutch position sensor. I just have to fliddle with the clutch pedal a little and it'll turn over.

That blows my mind if the damn key is the problem.

Are your keys encoded? Remote start? Mopar alarm?
Might be the battery eh.

After driving some more, I don't think the key makes a difference. Initially it was probably wishful thinking.

The truck still intermittently crank longer to start. I think I'm going to take it to the dealer and have them check the ECM version and reflash to see if that's the case.

Is anyone still actively having this long crank issue intermittently? It will always start after long crank or 2nd try, just curious if this is something I have to live with or there's solution for it.

Bobman,

There was also a revision to the TSB you have listed above. Below is a copy of the revised TSB.

when mine sits a while....i.e 2 days or so without being touched, sometimes i will try to start it and it will crank as normal but not turn over. usually third time it will crank over. if i drive it daily i dont have the issue. I also noticed when i ran dieselkleen it stopped having the issue. i ran a few tanks without it, it did it the other morning so i immediately went to store and started running it the tank again.

Well, problem solved. Went to the dealer, showed them the TSB + revision, they just did a flash to the latest. Truck starts like a champ now. Of course truck was out of warranty and they charged me $120 to do the reflash, oh well what can you do.

I think the truck even runs a little smoother with the reflash and the EGT is a tad lower across the board.

One thing the dealer was warning me was, when they reflash they wipe out everything include the "key module" so sometimes they can't reprogram the old keys. In that case they would have to use to new key to reprogram (another $180), but after the new key is programed they can then go back and reprogram the old keys. Apparently I lucked out and my old keys were still able to be reprogramed. Not sure if I follow their explanation, but may be this could explain why some people have better luck with one key or another?????

Anyways, I'm all fixed. Thanks all for your feedback.

Glad you got it all worked out.

Try turning the key on for 30sec then do it again. If this works check the fuel pump if OK then check the return line for a leak. Sound like you are losing pressure. This has happen before with the return line. GOOD LUCK
