Gascap message solved

I got the gascap message on the odometer a few weeks ago and have been trying to resolve. Was dealing with a few issues at the same time, and finally got those handled so got a chance to focus on this. Checked the canister under the hood and traced the hoses down to the carbon canister down by the gas tank. As I looked up next to the down exhaust pipe on the drivers side, I found the problem. For some reason, Dodge thought it ok to just run this rubber and plastic hose for the evap right next to the exhaust. There was at most 1.5 inches of space between them with no protection. The only thing holding it in place is a loosely hanging ground strap. Needless to say, found the problem. Looks like overtime the plastic portion had melted away and formed a nice hole causing the leak. Here's the pictures and solution for me. I cut the plastic piece right above the hole, added a hose with insulation over it, and then rerouted it so that it's pulled away from the exhaust pipe.

What's the gas cap message and what year/engine is your D?

If you forget to put your gascap back on, your D will eventually say "gascap" where the odometer is. Essentially it just means the evap system has a problem somewhere. In my case it was the hole in the hose. Got some codes in regard to the evap system as well. My D is 2005 HEMI, I'm the only owner. She's been good to me and about to hit 100K.

******:

WOW...... been chasing a P0456 for more than a year on my 04 Hemi D.

I will take a look ASAP and hope this information from you fixes the issue. I HATE having the darned CE light glowing all the time.

For me, it's kind of like running around in week old underwear. No one else knows because the D still runs like a top, but I know and it bothers me.

I have been getting the same gascap message for awhile now. Dealer checked everything and couldn't find the problem. I checked myself and my hose is nowhere near the exhaust. I'm at a loss as to where the problem is. Tried 3 different gascaps too with no luck
