Is it safe?

Yep no problems it is actually starting to become popular to put tires on rims that are skinner than they are. This causes the tire to bulge out a little. I am running a 14.5" wide tire on a 14" rim only problem is mounting them sucks unless you have the proper tools.

Great. 12 wide wheels, here I come!!

I only ask because they are cheaper from summit (way cheaper) than getting the humvee wheels from trailworthyfab. I'm still getting the tires from twf though.

12.5 are difficult to install on a 10" rim. i had to help the tire tech seat the bead. i pitty your tire guy.

use a ratchet strap around the tread to buckle out the side walls. this will make the bead less than impossible to seat. also large volumes of quick air can push out the side walls too. a good shop compressor is handy. or the old either EXPLOSION trick!! if you have the balls

a 12.5 tire on a 12 rim, IMO that isnt the way to go. rims 10 wide should be plenty, especially if you might back out of the extreme 7-8 lift.

as i am, so choosey, it hard to find just what i want. some people dont get it, but thats who i am. and when things work out to a finish, i know, i'm happy. it's never easy, to alter, or customize, but its worth the effort, only to you!
a 9" rim for a 12.5 tire? hummm. what is the back spacing?

is it safe? a 12.5 on a 12 rim? if you keep enough pressure in them. elliot had you ever lost a bead/ off roadin? some guys pressure down to craw & bog!

I don't understand why you would want to run a 12.50 wide tire on a 12" wide wheel. You'd have to keep a lot of air in there to hold the bead off road. Also, the tire won't stand as tall it should.

What rim are you looking for?

I'm running 14/42/17" Irok's on 17x9's and wouldn't ever want to go any wider on the wheel.

it is popular to run rims as wide as possible, more so in the lowered/ low profile type. when there's less side wall, a 40 or 50, low pro, it is more critical to match the tire centimeter width with the rims width in ". at every monster truck show, at least one truck blows off a tire. its devistating if you expect to drive that vehicle home! steve your tires are 3 and a half inches wider than the rim. was it difficult to seat the bead?

i just tend to error on the side of modest caution. i'm not telling him not to do it.

actually this is the fun part, really. the right rim & tire combo for your purposes!

I would never run that wide of a rim and that narrow of a tire. Yes it spreads it out... and looks like something I'd see on the South side of Phoenix. >bad idea<:ugh
Aside from the safety issues the wear is poor and the sidewalls want to roll over. Do that a couple times and if the belts seperate you may have an issue...or a fatality.
If you want the "rubber band" look, buy the correct rims and tires and do it right.

I had 12.5s on a 10 inch rim and that was almost too wide. A good size tire for this wide of a rim is a 15 inch sectional width. 14.5 minimum.
jus' sayin...

I don't want to run that wide a wheel, that was just the only width I could find with the backspacing less than 4.75. I want lower, even if it's just 4.5 backspacing.

For the record, they are going to be 16.5in wheels, with 37x12.5 tires. I'll keep looking I guess.

Oh, and I hate the rubber band look. I'll leave that for the cars that can't get out of their own way.

Alright, someone find me some wheels for a 37x12.5 tire

requirements:
Must be black
16.5
backspacing: 4in or less
lug spacing: 8x6.5
100 bucks or less

1....2....3 GO!

I did lie to you on accident my tire is 15" wide and rim 14" but I am going to run a 12.50 on a 10" wide rim. You question was it safe and I will still say yes. Would it be my first choice no but if you have a wider rim then you can go bigger in tires and not have to buy wider rims.

If you found a set of 12" wide rims then go for it and remember the worst part is mounting them. They will wear awesome so have no idea what they are talking about being unsafe as desertdog56 is saying mine handles great wears perfect.

Well you got to realize this is almost like asking what tire pressure to run. You will find allot of different answers and different beliefs. I can only respond with what I know from experience.

I just know if I had the money I would run 41 14.50 22 Irok radials on 22x14 fuel rims.

Yeah, I won't go that big ever. No where to use it here. The land is so flat you wouldn't believe it. No mud anywhere except right after it rains, but then it's like ponds, and I like dry floor boards.

Well I thought I would never go that big then went to Indy and Lima truck shows and blew that idea out the window.

Yeah, if I did that, I'd need 2 more trucks. One to jack sky high, one to race, and one to tow them with. Don't forget the money to do all that.

With this truck, and the way I'm building it, I can do all 3 :D

Well makes sense I was thinking of building my diesel for light pulling comps just for fun.
