08 Hemi oil consumption

I have an 08 1500 Mega Hemi with 180K on it. The oil is changed every 3K-3.5K miles. It is now using a qt. about every 400 miles. No external leaks its dry as day one and no smoke out of the tail pipe. Dealer pulled the plugs and O2 sensors and they are dry with no fouling and sensors are dry. Chrysler has a bulletin saying a qt. every 750 miles is okay. The dealer says its normal wear and not covered under the lifetime powertrain warranty. I have had 3 oil samples done over the past several years just for the hell of it and the all come back fine with no signs of any metal (of any type) in the sample. I would think if its showing no meatal it would not be normal wear on parts and more like a valve guide seal or broken ring. Anybody have any problems like this or thoughts? Thanks in advance.

If it isn't leaking or burning, some dirty low-life is siphoning it out. Catch 'em an' string 'em up! Seriously, it has to be be one or the other. As for "normal" oil consumption, those excuses are a bit tiring. My '03 at 130K loses NO oil between changes. No burns, no drips, no errors. A quart every 400 miles is more than my F-150 lost and it had a leak!. As for oil changes, you can pretty much stop that - It's losing a full oil change every 3K anyway. You might try heavier oil, maybe 10W-30 instead of 5W-

Look for a blue puff at start-up. The light has to be just right, but if the valve stem seals are leaking, they may allow oil to drip into the combustion chambers when it's parked. Then when you start it up, the oil is burned off in a puff of blue smoke. When I replaced the valve springs in mine, I also replaced all the valve stem seals. The blue puff went away. The puff wouldn't account for that much consumption, I don't think.

oil consumption

my wife's charger has a catch can and depending on the oil used they all have a volatility rate which equates to burn off, some are worse than others but at a quart between those mile figures, something is not adding up. her catch can doesn't hold a quart but it differently has some in it.

My '08 HEMI also uses oil at about the same rate as your truck. I bought it with 32,000 on it and it has always done this. It now has 77,000 on it.:frown

My 2012 4.7 just blew a blue smoke cloud yesterday morning. Mobil1 does smoke. 53000 miles and it sat for one whole day. It has been run hard with 2 trips to Maine, 3800 mile round trip, one of them towing a 14 ft cargo trailer. The last one had a 700 lb atv and 100lb of deer meat on back coming home last weekend. Checked the oil and it is halfway down the "ok" area. Changed the oil every 5000 miles. Hopefully a valve seal? Seems strange at 50,000.....

Just for the heck of it try using Amsoil next oil change and see if it makes a difference, it has very low NOACK compared too all the other synthetics. Just a thought.

I'm using Motorcraft 5w/20 semi synthetic. Dealer told me that's not good oil I r minded them that they did the last oil change and had the same results. No puff of blue when I start it or jump on it.Dealer wants me to pay so they can pull it apart and if they find something it would be covered under the LIFETIME power train warranty. My fear is the will pull it apart find nothing stick me with a bill for several grand and I will still be using oil. I have even offered to pay for an oil report and they can send it to whatever place they want so they can compare it to mine showing no metals in the sample. I got nowhere with that and they won't have a rep come out to look at it.

I would still try a different oil first, Amsoil, RedLine or Motul are the 3 best and fully synthetic not petroleum base. Cheaper and easier than that work you mentioned even if it does nothing.

It's been a while but I finally was at the dealer yesterday and Chrysler is now involved (not the normal customer care but a rep from tech support from Fiat Chrysler big difference) any way they did a compression test and the r/s was all good at 180-190 psi and less than 10 percent leak down. the drivers side was from 185 down to 140 psi. Cylinder 7 was the low one and it leaked down 80%. The thought is now a bad ring or valve seat or exhaust valve guide. The dealer gave the report to the Chrysler guy. (dealer called the guy called him back 2 hours later) And now they want a wet compression test done to see if its a ring or up top. The service manager was a little pissed that it took so long for them to call him back since the wet test could of been done at that time but it has to be done they way they want it done. So now I have to bring it back and they are going to keep the truck until its fixed and give me a loaner car for the duration.

I just did a search for this same issue and I'm in a similar boat. I have an 04 with 160,000 miles and I'm using a lot of oil in between changes with no oil leaking out visibly and no puffs of smoke on start up. I bought it with 16,000 miles and it was show room condition and I've used Amsoil 5w-30 and Amsoil filters the entire time.

The only thing I would think the motor doesn't like is I do a LOT of short trips with the truck. My work is 6 miles away and I drive it there and home and a lot of other short trips to local stores. That said, I just took it on a 3 hour highway trip last weekend and whether I drive short or long trips, it runs great overall. It really has me shaking my head but maybe I should start with checking compression on all cylinders.

Try some Lucas Oil Stabilizer in the next oil change or when you top it off next.

I think you add about 20% of oil capacity.

So I got it back last Wednesday the dealer put a d/s head on it. The valve guides were shot. 200 miles and 3 days later I'm driving it and it starts to run rough and is pushing white smoke out of the tailpipe and the check engine light comes on. I pull over and shut it off thinking the head gasket blew. Checked the fluids all good no mix of oil/water and then I could smell the fuel. I plugged in my code reader and P0203 comes up wiring short or bad injector #3 that was the side that was apart. I get towed to the dealer and get a call yesterday runs fine no codes stored when I checked it I left the code and didn't clear it so the dealer could see it. They ordered an injector and will replace it but when the were taking it out of the shop it locked in 4 wheel low by itself and won't come out. So they also ordered a acuator for the transfer case and a new TIPM and those will be in tomorrow. Just glad I have lifetime power train and lifetime bumper to bumper max care. I just want it back.

Thanks for the update, wagntwister. I'm glad as well that you have your extended warranties. That's certainly frustrating when you've barely had it back and it needs to go back to the dealer again so soon. Hopefully they will be able to get this taken care of ASAP. Please continue to keep us posted.

Ok so I get it back New injector installed New TIPM installed and a new 4wd shift acuator installed. Driving home the heat just blows out of the dash vents was fine before that since the day it was towed in I had the defroster on. Called the service manager he said they had a few had TIPM out of the box but he didn't think it controlled the heat. I run it down the next day they check it and the found that the blend doors we're bad and I had that all replaced just under a year ago. The dealer makes an appointment for me that works for both of us and gives me a loaner. They called me and said whole new heater box with doors and motors are needed. Ok replace whatever is needed since its covered they also did the water pump since it started to make some noise in the bearing. I picked it up yesterday afternoon and now maybe I can get some miles on it to see if the oil consumption issue has been resolved.
