What should the Trans temp be?

I just installed a trans temp gauge on my 98 V10 w/ 47re trans. I was driving for about 15-minuets and in that time the temp rose to 230F. Is that what the normal range should be? Seems high to me. It was around 90F outside. The weird thing is once I take it out of OD the temp would drop to 150F. Once I put it back in to OD within 30 sec it would be over 200F again.
I'm just wondering what the normal range should be.
The sender is in line with the cooler.
Thanks.

Holy!! That's a tad warm! Sounds like you've got excessive slippage and taking it out of O/D and locking the converter drops your temps. My trans (46RE, half ton garbage) runs at about 180*-210*(tops) on the warmer days. But it definitely doesn't rise 50* in 30 seconds when the converter isn't locked! Is your transmission factory? If it is it might be time to do a lil work...

I replaced it in the beginning of this year. It was suppose to be a factory rebuilt one. My last tranny lost 2nd gear so I replaced it. I have a 1 year warranty on it still. Should I call on it and see if they will warranty it? Or just keep it out of OD?

I might start with getting your truck scanned for codes, see what comes up. I'm not an expert in transmissions, but it does sound like something is definitely wrong. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in with some more insight.

I noticed today that once the T converter locks up the temps drop real fast. Almost instantly. But if I'm going too slow to where the converter isn't locked up then the temps keep rising. With OD off the converter locks up at 35mph. With OD on the T-converter locks up at 50mph.
Could the T converter be going bad? It's weird how when it locks up I can see the temp drop so fast.
Yes the rpms drop when the OD is turned on.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Could the check ball cause this problem? I seen it in the cooler line but there was no way I could remove it.

It sounds like your converter is "stalling" too much. When the clutch locks up it takes out all the stall (and slippage) and it is cooling off. You don't have bigger tires on this thing with the stock rearend ratio's?

can anyone recommend a transmission gauge? Or do you use just the standard oil temp gauge?? Thanks.

Yeah I have the stock rear end which is 3.55 and I'm currently running 35's.
That is definitely making it worse. You need at least 4.10's Are you sure the torque converter is locking up the clutch? if not, that is the heat problem.

I have an autometer in the test port and seldom see 180, comforting....

That's the test port temp, my temps are measured from the 'hot' line to the trans cooler. if you're seeing 180 at the port, my guess is your cooler lines are considerably warmer.

There's still al ot of debate on which location to run your temp sender. I run mine in the 'hot' cooler line to see what temps are developing in the trans and to catch any sudden problems before they compound themselves. But, I know everyone has their reasons as to the location of their sender.:SPIN:

The "hot line" is the front line. It exits from the torque converter and will be the hot spot when the converter isn't locked.
It will probably be the hot point even with the converter locked depending how close the exhaust is to the transmission.

Exactly, I'd rather know the maximum temperature my fluid reaches (as above ~220 it starts to breakdown), so I know if a problem is starting to arise, even on short trips. Others have their preferences, this is just, IMHO, the best spot for the sender.:teacher:

Yeah it definitely locks up. If I drive on the highway going over 50 MPH the temps stay around 140F. When I'm going to slow for the T converter to lock up the temps just shoot up.

It has to be the taller tires and the stock gear ratio. It is constantly stalling the converter up like you have the brakes on.
