I am upgrading my plugs, wires, etc... on my 96 Ram 318. I am installing an MSD Blaster Coil along with MSD 8.5mm wires. I am looking at going with a MOPAR performance cap and rotor and Bosch Platinum plugs. Any other good combinations to think about? :rck:

Just make sure the cap and rotor have brass tips. I've never used bosch plugs and don't really know a whole lot about them, but if you haven't bought the plugs yet I would really suggest thinking about getting either Autolite 3923's or NGK 2262's. Throughout tons of posts and research over the years on these forums I've found those 2 plugs to be used and recommended the most and you really can't go wrong with either one. I've got the NGK's in my '02 and I also ran them in my '97 318. Plus the autolites are really inexpensive and can be found everywhere, including wal-mart! Yes, wal-mart, but that has no bearing on the quality of those plugs.

Overrall you've got a pretty good combination and the MSD wires are pretty good.

Go with the NGK, the Autolites suck!
You need to check out the IAT link in my signature!

Yeah, why? You're actually the first person I've heard say they suck.

Stay away from Bosch platinum plugs!!!!!!!

I have had nothing but trouble with these plugs in any Mopar product. I have had more customer driveability problems with these than every other plug combined.

I always recommend Champion or NGK depending on application. Autolites will sometimes seize when used with aluminium heads and left in a little too long.

I've got the bosh plats in mine now. No problems other than a slightly rough idle, but i think the wire for cyl 6 has the crappy carbon shiz in it. I changed out the cap and rotor, and the pin on the cap for 6 was all gunked. Too bad I can get a good set of wires at the moment. :(

I got the Autolite 3924's. Not sure about the difference between them and the 3923's. I went with the Echlin cap and rotor. Have not installed them yet but hopefully the results will be good. Still time to change my mind and go with the NGK's.

The 3923's are a "colder" plug and are supposed to give a slight power boost.
You will want a cooler plug if you are having detonation problems as this will help dissipate heat away from the plug quicker eliminating one of the possible hot spots in a cylinder than can cause detonation. Performance will not differ with heat ranges.

My 2¢:)

phatman,
you mentioned you couldn't find a decent set of plug wires, i grabbed a set from Summit about 4,000mls ago and they've been doing great... actually i bought the set {cap rotor and 8mm plug wires} for $55... not to bad! and chances are if its time for wires its time for cap and rotor

Plugs, rotor and cap

What is the reommended plug wire replacement for the 2nd gen, 5.2?

Good point on the brass tips on the rotor and cap, I will check mine before I install the d-mm thing (so hard to get to) I think I might need a surf board to lay across from one fender to the other to lay on to reach back there :rck:

get a stepstool and work from the sides, or sit on the passenger's side fender one leg in the e-bay, the other out. im 6'7" and that helped abunch

I found the best way to change the cap and rotor was from kneeling onthe front bumper and working from there. I went with the 3923's and noticed a decent gas mileage boost when added with the rest of the items from my tuneup. Brass Contact cap and rotor from napa, Belkin wires kit, cleaned the K&N Dropin, and of course for xtra HP, I cleaned the engine. LOL

just take off the air hat and go to town, kneeling on the bumber with a towel was comfortable enough for me, and don't cross wires, oh btw way this is funny, a clerk at pep boys said "those trucks dont have a cap and rotor distributor, they have smelters"

Race I have the same set up you are going with and have the NGKs. I have not had a problem with mine at all. If you already have the Autolites then you may as well stay with them.
