Near Instant Temp Spike

I haven’t driven the truck in a while, I’ve left the lock heater plugged in. It finally started getting warm this past weekend. I fired up the truck and drove about a half mile when the temp gauge spiked to max temp and the warning light came on and it chimed. I pulled over shit her down and cranked her back up. No warnings but I drove back home. The gauge seemed to be rising pretty quickly based on the short distance driven. I parked her back in the driveway and drove something else.

I have never had a cooling issue could this be just a result of the engine block being plugged in so long (doubt it)? A stuck t-stat is my bet but I’ve never seen something spike that fast...

A half mile will barley get the temp gauge moving on mine. Try changing the temp sensor first. Cheap and easy first shot.

Temp sensor as in the t-stat (thermostat)? Lol

Well I drove her today about 20 miles at low rpm (1200 cruise and max of 2500) and relative low speed (max 55) on fringe rural and city streets. It was 60 out. The temp gauge slowly went up to the center point and held there and even dipped as I drove. I didn’t hear the fan kick in but I had the windows down and didn’t think about it until I was parked. So I am thinking it was a stuck t-stat. I may still replace it just as cheap insurance and if it failed once... it will do it again.

Now if only replacing the side view mirror on my expedition were as chea and easy. Bleck.
