Cylinder Shut off feature...

A question about that cylinder shut off feature thats comming for the hemi I guess...

Isn't that going to make the cruising RPM note sh*tty??? Especially with aftermarket exhaust... Suddenly your v8 is a 4 banger... I was thinking about this the other day and it got me wondering...

I was thinking the exact same thing.... Aftermarket exhaust will definately sound like shite when in 4 banger mode! Not only that, but they claim it will make the change between modes in like 40ms. To get the weight of these things moving off any light, its going to kick into 8cyl mode. 4 banger mode will only be used at cruising speeds I suspect.... Personally i think the whole MDS thing on a truck is going to be lame and useless...

Years ago I think it was Cadallic had an engine they called the 864 or the 468 - It was supposaed to run on 8, 6 or 4 cylinders depending on speed or load. I think it didn't work right so they quit making it not long after they started.

My father used to be a GM mechanic. We were just talking about this the other day, he said that engine was a royal pain in the arse!

I think it would be best if it only worked when you turned cruise control on, personally.

I only cruise on long trips, and thats probably the only time you'd really enough gas to make it worth it - on long trips.

Yeah, you'll be cruising along and have to pass someone. Imagine the horrific sound that will make. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ - ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAARRRR all within 40 ms. People are gonna wonder work broke.

I don't think its going to be that big of a difference in sound. Think of it this way - you can get a more agressive sounding muffler and then not have the drone on the highway!

Maybe this way the hemi will actually get the rated mpg. My SRT gets better gas mileage than my hemi did.

As far as I know, cylinder deactivation is not slated for use in the trucks due to duty cycles being much different than cars and more unpredictable. As for the hemi cars, they probably will be dead quiet anyway. Kind of like when they neutered the '04 and '05 rams.

Yes, that engine is in production... however it's only in and will only be in the cars, they will not have that feature in the Rams.

Unless I'm way out of the loop as well and they just started that up.

Right now, word is DCX wants to put MDS in the Hemi Rams but has not worked the bugs out of it yet. Whether or not this happens will also depend on how big truck sales hold up, and that in turn will depend on gas prices. I think what DCX should consider first (if they arent already) is putting a small diesel in the Ram 1500 as an option. I agree MDS on the truck engine could be promlematic, and I wouldnt want it on my truck personally.

It better be a small diesel... I'll be pissed as hell if they pull the same shit with the CTD as they did with the Hemi in 03.

What did they pull again? The Hemi was planned all along to go in all series' of the Rams.

A CTD from the HD Rams will not go into a 1500. It's not even possible. But a small Mercedes diesel or better yet, a smaller version of the Cummins would work, and would give Dodge a big advantage if gas prices do not go back down.

I dunno man, it works under light acceleration and crusing. I for one LIKE hearing the exhaust on the highway, under light acceleration and cruising. And I can't imagine that 4 cylinders would sound as good or not that different than 8 through a v8 exhaust set up no less.

Anyone know if you can get a hemi car WITHOUT the feature?

If I buy a v8, I want a v8 ya know. I don't want a v8 only a percentage of the time.

Don't know how they are going to roll it out. In Hondas the cylinder deactivation is only available on higher models.

Nope. But in a car, I would want it personally. IN a truck, no thanks.

Yes, it was planned... but not till 04. When I got my 03 2500, there was no talk of it being in the 1500s at that time.

It was pretty widely known as early as '02 that a new Hemi engine was coming as a 360 replacement, and that it would be offered on all series' of the Rams. But you had to be reading around to know about that I guess. Most salesmen/dealership people didnt know about it until they started showing up on the lots.

You got that right. I went in and ordered mine before the knucklehead salesman knew it was coming out. The week before he had told me it was going to be a year since they were out.

Like I said, I knew that it was gonna replace the 360, but at the time it wasn't mentioned of going into the 1500s in the 03 models. So a few months later after I picked mine up, I was a lil upset.

I thought I was the only person who remembered the old Caddy 4-6-8 fiasco...It didn't work then, can't see it working now. What a lame idea. Be carefull what you ask for in a small diesel, if DCX can't learn from Caddy's cylinder shutoff fiasco, they might be tempted to try and duplicate that other great fiasco...."Let's take a small block gas engine and make it a diesel".....

Don't you think engine management has come along a little bit since then? Did you feel the same way about early fuel injection? I don't know if I'm gonna like it...but I want to see it first!
