I am planning to get a Magnum, but want the SRT8.
Problem is we need it to tow our 21' camper. About 2800lbs.

Has anyone put a hitch on and towed anything with some weight?

I have an '02 Durango which will get traded in.
That truck didn't have the tow package, but I've since added the tranny cooler and wiring.

I can't believe how even with the tow package, you don't get a hitch with the Magnums

If I read my owner's manual right, the SRT8 has a tow rating of 2800 lbs (surprised me...alot), with 300 lbs tongue. I intend to slap a hitch on mine for light duty (<1500 lbs), and my concern is the rear fascia, and whether the hitch will bolt on without modification.

Well after a lot of thought, I have decided to hold off buying anything right now and to modify my Durango a bit so it tows better.
Thanks for the info though. It will make the SRT8 choice that much easier since they address towing in the manual.

OK, but I was wrong. From the manual...

Max frontal area 40 sq ft (I assume of trailer)

Max gross weight 3800 lbs
Max tongue weight 380 lbs

This is with 2 passengers and luggage. The rating goes down with more passengers, to a low of 1000 gross/100 tongue w/5 passengers and NO luggage.

Not bad for a 425HP sport wagon on 20" F1s. :D

Glad I could help....

Where do they come up with the 40 sq-ft max frontal area?
That's a wierd one.

Well now you screwed up my plans....LOL
I already decided not to get the SRT8 because of lack of tow capacity. Now with 3800 lbs listed, the SRT8 could be back on. the wheels are turning.. :drivingz:

Thanks for info.

Sorry for doing that to you. :D I think the 40 sq ft frontal area has to do with drag and constant load on the powertrain (read: cooling system). I was surprised, like you, that the car has a 3800 lb rating. With a tow dolly, that means most cars!!

<grin>

I'm the kind of guy that drives my cars all the time.
Not much for trailer queens.

Also, I can't tow the car and the camper ;)

If I use the car to tow the camper, I'll then have the car to drive around to places.

We've kind of put the new thing on the back burner until next year. Can't decide which other vehicle to get rid of.

SRT8 or not, it's still a station wagon. When I was young, my dad raced NHRA Stock, and his tow vehicle was a wagon. Matter of fact, lots of people towed with ordinary cars...because they could. Now, OEMs have everyone convinced that cars can't actually *do* anything....that's what trucks are for, and they've built the cars "thinner" (read: manufacturing costs) so that they can't do what they used to...but the Magnum is about as close as you're gonna get to a '73 Impala Wagon with a 454. Just with a whole lot more power...lol.

ps--Draw-Tite's hitch is not bad, but DCX's is *way* cooler--100% invisible when insert removed....pricey, but worth it, IMHO
