2.7 Engine Problems/What to do????

My Intrepid has 84,000 miles. This past August the air conditioner stopped working. I didn’t think much of it and decided to wait until this summer to fix it. Then, I noticed this winter that if I tried to warm up my car, it wouldn’t while it was in park or idling. It would only blow out warm air when I was driving. Then I noticed the oil light came on at stop lights and would go off when I accelerated. I took the car in about a month ago to have the heater fixed and the mechanic popped off the top to my radiator, showed me what looked like peanut butter in my radiator and told me to trade it, FAST! I’m not really in a position to do that since I owe a lot of money on the car and would rather try and fix what I have. I suspect eventually my engine will go, just like everyone elses has.

Currently my car is parked. My engine hasn't seized yet, but I fear it will at any time given the "symptoms" my car is displaying.

Is it safe to assume that I will need to replace my engine given what's going on with my car? I don't have the money to replace it now which is why it is parked.

From that description, it surely sounds like your 2.7 is on the way out. There is probably oil in the coolant, which means there is a leak somewhere, water pump, head gasket, etc. Its probably also sludged up, and may need a timing chain and guides.

Check out this thread. It is a good option for replacing the engine, and is cheaper and more reliable than getting another 2.7.

Sounds like my car at one point in history, does your car vibrate vilolently at stoplights while in drive, Mine turned out to be a burnt valve, eventuallly caused my oil pressure light to flicker when in drive at idel, switched to synthetic with a stablizer after having the valves fixed and the head rebuilt.

Right now you may still have time - for about $1000 bucks (or less if your handy or know a cheap shop) you can salvage the situation. You need to replace the water pump, timing chains and tensioners. You also need to pull the valve covers and oil pan to flush the sludge out and have the radiator cleaned out. With this work you may have dodged a bullet.

Before spending the money on new parts I'd have someone that knows what they're doing inspect the valves (possibly pull one head) and plastiguage the rod bearings to insure you not throwing good money away. Most likely you have coolant in your oil and even if you stop the leak (probably the water pump) the damage may have already been done.

Mine just crapped out on Sunday. Same symptoms same mileage. If you like the car enough to spend 3K rebuilding the engine go ahead otherwise dump it fast.

In my case the timing chain went and took out the pistons. Yeah just like everyone told me would happen on here two years ago.

Everyone be aware there is a class action lawsuit against Christler for this engine. Make sure you file complaints if your car dies due to this problem.

I have a buddy of mine that works on Chrysler products out of his house (was a Chrysler Engine Mechanic for over 20 years) and recently had a 2.7L intrepid out there .. he pulled the motor cause it had a bad knock and low oil pressure .. from what he explained to me it spun a bearing which in turn .. he had to do a crank kit, new rod, new timing chain, new timing chain tensioner and a few other things ... he said that is common especially when the oil isnt changed as often as it should be .. something to do with the engine design ..... he called it a friction motor causes the oil to break down faster then say like a 318

Dude my car is full of sludge.
Can your friend explain the hundreds of car owners who have taken care of their cars changed the oil religiously and still lost their car to sludge? The car is a piece of @#$%!

And if you see any of my posts from two years ago you'd see I totally had faith that this car would hold up. Yeah right. Just like I was told. Junk city.

From what he was telling me it is plainly a poor design ... it he called it a friction engine so it breaks the oil down faster so you have to change the oil every 3,000 miles or it will sludge up ........ Have you ever overheated your car .... that will cause the oil to sludge as well even if you change you oil on a regular scheduled maintence basis.
