I purchased a 1998 dodge ram last year, when I bought it the previous Owner told me the truck ran and drove fine until one day it caught of on him while driving and he didn’t have the time or health to fix it so I bought it and attempted diagnosing it so far I’ve replaced crankshaft position sensor (between engine and trans), new fuel pump assembly, new fuel filter, and installed a used pcm from a 1999 ram parts truck and still I can get it to start on the first try only it will run for a few seconds and then cut off once it’s cuts off the first time all it will do is crank and not start up agains. When I do get it to run for those few seconds the motor sounds good and strong but I am at a loss I have spark, fuel , and compression what could I be looking at with this truck? Any help is appreciated

Sorry for the late reply I finally got around too working on the 98 dodge ram 5.9. After lots of diagnosing and replacing fuel pump assembly, crankshaft position sensor, all relays involved with engine and ignition, distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, pcm, coolant temp sensor, instrument cluster, throttle body, found the culprit to be clogged up catalytic converter. After removing spark plugs and seeing they were completely wet and black I decided to unbolt both exhaust flanges going to exhaust manifolds and the motor fired right up, idled rough for a few minutes then evened out and ran great. Tomorrow I will be hallowing out catalytic converters and reinstalling exhaust pipe flange bolts to manifold. Thank you too everyone who replied I appreciate the help and advice

Today I gutted the catalytic converter and it ran and Idled not perfect though but it is progress since it never ran before for more than a few seconds but today it idled and ran rough however no acceleration with gas pedal applied I know the fuel injectors are controlled by the distributor so I decided to remove it and set the motor on Tdc and reinstall the distributor and set timing With my Maximus 4.0 scan tool and it desires the sync at exactly 0 however mine is reading between -0 to 1 not dead on 0 as it should while I was scanning it I thought at 270k miles could the chain have excessive play? Causing the timing to be off a bit so when I went back to look under the hood after it running for about 30 mins I saw both exhaust manifold glowing red hot any ideas?
