Hi,
My 2001 Ram Van B2500 5.2L V8 gasoline van has 189000 miles. Transmission part number on the side of the transmission appears to be PK52119753AA 0171 1973 .
Changed the tranny fluid (used 4+ fluid) and filter (from dodge) about 5000 miles ago. During the fluid and filter change, I noticed that the pan was pretty clean, with no noticeable metal or filings, just very fine metal particles (paste size particles), but not even that was covering the magnet in the pan very thickly, so I concluded that there was nothing much going on badly in the transmission at the time.
Nevertheless, I did change the fluid because miles and because of some problems with shifting correctly when cold and when starting again after coming to a stop. After coming to a stop and when starting again, I noticed that the transmission did not appear to be starting out in 1st gear. I could put it in Low, and it would respond like I expected. Afterwards, I would check the fluid level and find it a bit low (below the low mark on the stick, but still on the stick) and so I would top it off, solving the problem of starting automatically in 1st gear from a stop.
Both before and after I changed the fluid and filter, I had also noticed that the transmission is losing a little transmission fluid, not leaking enough to puddle on the ground, or enough for me to be able to tell exactly where it is leaking from, but enough to make me have to add about 1/4 to 1/2 pint every 600 miles or so. While leaking slowly, it is leaking enough for the level to eventually fall below the 'low' mark on the dip stick, and low enough to negatively affect shifting. But, when I would bring the level back up, the van would run fine. So much for history.
Today as I was driving it (for about 15 minutes) the motor simply died while driving at about 30 mph, no shuttering, no sounds, just no more running motor. After coming to a stop, the engine lights would come on and the key would cause the engine to turn over but the engine would not even attempt to start or run.
The digital display odometer indicated 'no bus' when I came to a stop when it first died. When I used the three times-key-on, key-off method to display the OBD codes, the message "chec 920, 921, 999" displayed, then nothing more. I believe that these are the codes:
P0921 Gear Shift Forward Actuator Circ Range/Perf
P0922 Gear Shift Forward Actuator Circ Low
P0999 Shift Solenoid F Ctrl Circ Hi
Based on what I have read on these forums, the 'no bus' error message made me think that the sensors, such as the crankshaft, camshaft, MAF, or throttle position sensors might be bad, but each time I run the error codes on the odometer display they return the same message "chec 920, 921, 999" which leads me to think I should replace either the transmission range sensor, transmission speed sensor, or transmission governor sensor first. On the other hand, perhaps something more is going on that is keeping the transmission range sensor from working right.
Any ideas on what might be the problem?
Thanks for your thoughts.
