Coming up on my first oil change for my new mini-van and the users manual is very specific about the oil weight. Most cars come with a graph of oils vs. outside temperatures, not with this vehicle. Is there a range of oils that are acceptable for a 2005 SXT with the 3.8L engine?

What does the manual say to use...10W30?

Depending on where you live. Cold temps. require a thinner oil like 5W30 and warmer climates require something thicker like 10W30 or 10W40.

You don't want to use something too thin or you won't get the protection your engine needs and you don't want to go too thick (20W50) because then it takes too long for the pump to distribute the oil.

10W30 is a good "all-around" oil.

Then there's synthetics.......

All that info is in the owners manual , most reccomend 5w-30 for year round use but you can use 10w-30 when temps are above 0 degrees .

I use 5w30 Mobil 1 and Mopar filter.

Manual says 5w-20, but I can't find that in any of the stores that I've been to here in Hawaii.

I think you'll be okay with 5W-30.
