Weird Noise Coming From Rear of Truck

1629 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  cskit1500
Just started today. There is a loud almost Clicking/Clacking noise that comes from underneath my truck. More towards the rear and it gets faster as I go faster. When I slow down around 10-15 mph its gets slower and will pause and start again randomly until I come to a complete stop in which case the noise stops. It does it in reverse forward and if I'm rolling and put it in neutral. I looked under the truck and didn't notice anything rubbing anything or coming into contact with anything. I recently had new tires put on but they've been on for about a week now. Any help would be much appreciated. I had 4.56 gears installed but that was about 40,000 miles ago. I have 58,000 on the truck now. Theres is no leaking from the rear diff as well.

They obviously took your wheels off when they replaced the tyres last week.
I'd check the lug nuts, as alloy wheels need re-torquing, a few days after removal and refitting.
They tend to be loose. Something to do with Ally and steel being different metals.......... someone will chime in here.
Not sure if that's it, but worth a check and it's simple to do.
thx for the input, they seem pretty tight but I'll give it a try.
I checked my diff. fluid and it looks to be full but it is black and smells burnt if I was to change it would that fix my problem? Also if I do change the fluid what weight do I get? and what else would I need besides the fluid and gasket?
Doesn't sound good if the oil has a burnt smell. Gear oil naturally has a strong smell to it but gets alot worse if it is burnt! I believe your owners manual will tell you what weight oil to use for your diff. If I recall it was 75W-140 synthetic and if you have a LSD you will need a bottle of the LSD additive. Pretty easy to change. All you need is a drain pan, the new oil and a tube of RTV sealant to make gasket since our trucks don't come with a gasket. Once you remove the diff cover you should be able to see if you have any issues. If not check around the drive shaft, etc. Good Luck!
And check your new rubber for rocks stuck in the tread.. your proly thinkin WTF?? I had this problem once and took my truck in.. big rock wedged in the tread making a click every rotation.. Funny shit...

LOL. I wish it was only that. Im gonna make an appointment with the rearend guy here and I'll probably open up my rear tomorrow to see if I can find anything. I'm just not in the mood to spend any big bucks on this.
