Truck won't go into park

My truck doesn't want to go into park. It goes into park physically fine, but doesn't register, it thinks it's in reverse. I can play with the shifter, and push it forward into position and it will eventually register. Any ideas on what part or issue I can google?

Had a similar issue with my '06 a few years back. Went to my son's HS baseball game. When I put it in Park it didn't feel right. Like yours the handle was physically in the right spot, but the indicator wasn't. Made the mistake of messing with it and the cable snapped. Had it towed to the dealer.

It was an internal linkage issue (in addition to the cable). Some sort of check ball had slowly fell off the end. They found it in the pan. It ended up costing almost $600. Replaced the detent valve 211390 ($1.67), shift cable ($48.76) as well as the filters and fluid (they had to drop the pan).

Price breakdown:
Auto trans diag - $309.85
Parts (cable and valve) - $50.43
Transmission service (labor) - $149.93
Fluid/filter - $68.18
Shop supplies - $35
Tax - 7.69
Discounts - $45.98
Total = $575.10

Re: Truck Won't go into Park

I have the exact same truck and I had the exact same problem; mine wouldn't go into Park either. I took it to Eagle Transmission in Austin and they adjusted "a cable" for free and now it goes into park most of the time, if not, just rock it. New problem is that it sticks in second gear.
