Yesterday my transmission light came on. Checked the fluid, and it was not reading on the stick. Added a quart. Today, however, tranny fluid was blown over the engine. Question 1. Today I realized that the tranny dip stick is not seating all the way down. There is about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch that will not go down into the reservoir. We are thinking that we overfilled it since we didn't realize the dip stick will not go in all the way. Is the tranny dip stick suppose to seat all the way down? Question 2. Where would the tranny fluid be coming from? Is there a relief valve somewhere?

My tranny dipstick doesn't stay seated tightly either. I can push it down about 1/2" and it pops back up. I imagine it acts as an air vent(?). I haven't had any problems. Perhaps your leak is from a blown seal.

The stick on my 01 will not seat properly either. I brought it to the dealers attention when I had it serviced a few years back, and they said that was the norm.

Strannge though that this is the first vehicle I have owned that the tranny dipstick would not seat.

I would say that you probably did overfill it. I would just make sure you have the level right, and keep an eye on it.

The trans dipstick on my '99 Taurus sticks up a bit as well (less than 1/4"), not nearly as much as the Durango's. It's annoying!
