You may want to check out your throttle position sensor. These tend to cause problems with surging on a lot of our trucks. You can unbolt it from the throttle body and clean it fairly easily. Just a guess...

I was recently having the same issues, and 2 years ago I had to have the tranny replaced as these symptoms were the first alert to a tranny heading south. But luckily this time it was only the Throttle Position Sensor. Up here in Canada it cost me $56 and it is only 2 torx head screws and about 2 minutes to replace and now everything is back to normal. Hopefully that is your only problem too!!

And where can I find this throttle position sensor? Is there a way to test it first before swapping it out?

interesting, I will try to clean out my tps, and if that doesn't do anything then replace it. my truck has been fine for the most part and hasn't missed another shift, I might go floor it tonight just to see if it repeats though. It still does the rev up thing on the highway out of overdrive over bumps...I'm praying this tps clean/replace might solve something. Thanks for all the info gentlemen

Funny. I do not remeber it doing this before I swapped out my TB for a fastman. I must have screwed something up.

a new TPS cost $25 at autozone. I have a problem with my torque converter locking and unlocking. My tranny was replaced 4,000 miles ago with an upgraded remanned tranny. I called the manufacturer and they said my problem is electrical. He suggested replacing the TPS and or having a garage look at it for electrical problems. He said they had a durango with a problem where it would go in and out of OD and it was teh battery. He had a Grand cherekee that had another trans problem that ended up being the altinator. He said that is you let if go to long that it WILL mess up your trans, but it does not neccessarily mean that is whats causing it.

interesting, im gonna grab one of those from the parts store and throw it in then. Anyone know offhand if that one from autozone should perform just like a more expensive 'dodge' replacement or whatever?

What fluid are you running? I did my unit a "favor" and switched over to Redline front to back in my truck. Well the tranny just dont like the slick synthetic stuff. I had the same thing happening. Light load, hours on the road, the O/D lockup would jump in and out. Go over a bump over a rough section and the rpms jump 2 or 3 hundred then it goes back into lockup. I changed back to the non-synthetic good stuff and no more troubles, so far. About 5k miles so far since. I did hear that these trannies need the right fluid or this what happens and if left the tranny goes. I plan on changing mine often and only using +3 out of the ground.

interesting, ya I guess I'm just gonna do regular changes with the regular stuff. I am stil waiting on my tps and interestingly enough, i took the current tps out and just blew in it and such and put it back and my truck hasn't done the rev thing since...could just be a fluke cuz its only been like 3 days since I did that but I'm gonna still put in the new tps and see what happens

You'll love the new TPS. I'd been having the same problem for 6 months and the dealer couldn't solve it until I asked them to try a new TPS. Got it back yesterday and the shifting (or lack thereof) has been rock solid on the highway. This place rocks.

ya I agree this is a great resource, I put in the new tps and tested out my truck then tried to make it duplicate what it was doing before by using the right amount of throttle over big bumps on the highway and it hasn't done it yet, i feel like it probably solved it. This makes me more than happy. Might be my good mood, but it feels as if my truck is shifting better/easier into 4th from 3rd as well, it's not jerking as much like it has to throw itself into 4th...sweeeeet

Seth399 Glad to hear it worked out. I had to do a rebuild last year to "fix" the exact same problem, and 1 yr. later, its back.
I see that these tps units can be adjusted to work properly. Going to give it a try soon.

cool good luck Jim, hope it works out for you this time. Unfortunately I got on it WOT gettin on highway and it missed a shift again...anyone know how to pinpoint this as good as my other problem I just fixed with the tps?? I am thinking it has to do with adjusting bands hopefully, or maybe even the throttle position adjuster?? hmm
