Got a 1997 Ram3500 diesel 4x2 with a 47RE auto trans, 3.54 rear end. Trucks overweight with cargo box at 16000 +. Transmissions burning up.
We are attempting to upgrade to the newer (2003-2004) 48RE trans and that the only difference between them is that the 48RE trans has a different neutral switch. So we are told by APS Precision that We can take the guts of the 48RE and put them into the case of the 47RE which has the neutral switch and mini wiring harness that we need to work with our 1997 truck. Also that the overdrive/final drive rear part of the 48RE can be bolted on the back of the 47RE case. ONLY problem is that the 48RE overdrive/final drive only has a magnetic sensor output for the engine computer BUT no electronic speedometer output. Who knows where the 2003/2004 trucks get their speedometer output from??? Is it the rear axle?? We need to switch to a 4.10 rear axle anyway. Will a 2003/2004 rear axle fit on our truck easily and if there is a speedo output there, will it work with our existing wiring and computer/speedo?????....
