The Team Mopar and Don Schumacher Racing NHRA POWERade Funny Car trio of Gary Scelzi, Ron Capps and Jack Beckman would like to forget their visit yesterday, Oct. 28, to the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. All three drivers suffered first-round exits, with Scelzi and Capps taking crushing blows to their prospects in the NHRA Countdown to 1 two-race title shootout.

Scelzi, pilot of the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T, bowed out in a first-round loss to Cruz Pedregon after striking the tires. The same fate awaited Ron Capps, pilot of the Brut Revolution Dodge Charger R/T, in his opening round battle with Phil Burkart Jr. Jack Beckman, behind the wheel of his Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger R/T, broke not long after leaving the starting line in his match with Del Worsham.

Ninety-one points now separate Tony Pedregon and Scelzi, with Capps 113 points behind the leader. All Tony Pedregon needs to do at the final event in Pomona, Calif., next weekend is qualify to clinch the championship. The only glimmer of hope remaining for one of the Team Mopar duo to snatch the crown from Pedregon would be to win the event, set a national record, and pray that Pedregon does not qualify.

"We're going to Pomona to try to set the record and who knows?" said Scelzi. "Pomona is a great race track. You can haul ass there. We're going to go there and try to haul ass. We're going to go there probably more aggressive than ever, because that's what we need to do."

The lone HEMI®-powered Funny Car driver to emerge from the first-round was Torco Race Fuels Dodge Charger R/T driver Mike Ashley, who defeated Scott Kalitta in the opening stanza. His run didn't last long, however, as Ashley bowed out in a quarterfinals loss to Jim Head.

Next up for the Team Mopar NHRA Funny Car contingent is the season finale and the final event in the Countdown to 1, the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., scheduled for Nov. 1-4.

"It was just an unfortunate thing. I don't like the situation we're in, but that's what happens when it comes down to two races and, if that's the way it is, we can't change it. We just have to deal with it."

— Gary Scelzi, on his first-round loss at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals yesterday and the large gap separating him and current leader Tony Pedregon. Scelzi is second in the NHRA Countdown to 1 heading into the final event this weekend at Pomona. The only remaining hope for Scelzi to snatch the crown from Pedregon would be to win the event, set a national record, and hope that Pedregon does not qualify.
