You could Run rear rims that have less backspacing. Wont be able to rotate your tires from front to rear.
As for the U joint, you may have to get the d shaft retubed to accept a larger U joint.

Question: why remove a Mopar rear end for one from the General? I figure: if it works good, don't fix it.

Thanks.

14 bolts are very strong and very cheap

His wasn't working well, that is why he is upgrading to a stronger unit with more cheaper readily available parts in case he breaks something else.

I personally wouldnt run spacers. Is you 14 bolt a Full float or semi float?

In a semi float axle, the axle shaft transmitts power and supports the weight of the truck. A full float axle shaft only transmitts power, but does not support the wieght of the truck. Full floater is a stronger axle. GM offered the 14 bolt in both Semi float and Full float axles. 14 bolt Semi float also has a smaller ring gear than the full float
