This is about the 6th time in 6 weeks my truck has been at the dealership due to a slow transmission leak. So far within the 6 weeks they replaced everything but the tranny. But this time it has been in the shop, had 6 techs working on it, and it has been there for 4 days and they still cant figure it out. The truck is not leaving puddles it is just a very slow drip and it only shows on the bottom of the bell housing. What can this be. I am driving a rental minivan and it is killing me!

You went through 3 tranny's? or were they rebuilds?

Usually a leak from the bellhousing indicates a front seal. Perhaps there's a small crack in the welds of the torque converter???

Isn't there some kind of flourescent dye that can be added and then by using a blue light the source of the leak can then be found?

are you its tranny fluid and not oil the rear main can be leaking out on the the bottom of the bell housing other wise it could be 2 different gaskets on the tranny one being the front pump gasket or the pump seal witch is were the torque converter slide into

Its tranny fluid its a slow leak, it does not leave puddles but it leaks and I want it fixed while the truck is still under warrenty. All the seals have already been replaced. All the gaskets have been replaced. The tourqe converter was replaced. Now the three tranys, 2 were brand new one was remanufactured from mopar. Granted the truck was and still is under warrenty. I am leaving an update on my truck! It is still at the dealership. 7 days later. Isent this wonderfull. I cant win! I am trying to get the lemon law on them but because I bought this used (29K) from the dealership it seems to be a little harder to crack. There are no layers in my area that help in these situations. I am stuck with it I think. Granted the gave me a loaner but this minivan is crazy. I am 24 years old driving around a soccer mom car! If anyone has any ideas on what may help this situation (besides blowing the truck up, cant seem to find someone to help) please feel free to voice yourself. Thanks guys!

I will keep you updated.

tranny fluid at the bell housing is a 99% likelyhood of a bad front seal. not at all unusual to damage the seal during installation.

it could actually be a burr on the torque converter output sleeve, or perhaps it is out of round which is a bit more likely, make sure the check this out both visually and with a micrometer at three points minimum.

Is this something the dealership should already know or is it something to bring to their attention?

Thanks

Well here is another update. Make way for #4!!!!! I think this is a record. I spoke with the dealership and they said that something with the old tranny was not spinning tru. Which was causing the tourqe converter to keep blowing the seals. So inspite of everything this is the 4th tranny that will be put into this truck. I hope to see it by friday. I will still post what the outcome is after 12 days in the shop.

Well got the truck back last night. Here is the story... You will all know the way this DODGE DEALERSHIP WORKS! After 2 weeks of hell driving a minivan I get the call "come pick it up". By the time I left workand got to the dealership the service department was closed but the main part of the dealer was open for another 10 minutes. Got the paperwork for the truck. Now mind you it is under warrenty, I had to pay another $50 deductable for the truck. So far I think I paid close to $1000 in $50 detuctables scince I owned this truck (2 years). But dispite myself I was happy to get my truck back. Now as soon as I walk out the doors the guy closed and locked the doors of the dealership and leaves before I even walk to my truck. As I approach the truck it was filthy dirty. I am a nut when it comes to cleaning my truck (get the Q-Tips) I go to open the door and it looks like the mechanic used my door as a shop towel. There was grease all over the window, door handel and door. So I walk around the truck just to find more greasy handprints around the hood and passanger side door. Now I am snapping, I am yelling and swaring ect. at nothing, there is nobody around to even yell at. So, pissed off I unlock the truck and open the door just to find greasy bootprints on my floor, greassy hanprints on the steering wheel, blinker switch ect. You guys have no clue on how hot tempered I am at this point. You could litterly see smoke blowing out my ears. So I fly home and pull into my driveway. I put the truck in park and now this god awfull squeal is coming from my engine. I pop the hood and look and it is coming from the AC compressor. It is not the belt. Now here is another issue. I have a K&N intake on the truck, I found the filter off of the intake tube. So the whole time I drove home with no filter on my intake, Nice hunh. I turned off the truck ran into the house to get the digital camera to take photos of my rolling grease ball. I then wanted to double check under the truck and be certain that there was a new transmission and there was but they forgot to but in a bolt on the bell housing. The best part of this whole bunch of issues while I am under the truck taking photos I happen to look over at the fron driver side tire to find a mangled oil wrench mixed in with my rotor and caliper assy. The mechanics must have thought that my ruck was a great tool rack. The oil wrench must of got caught up in the rotor onmy ride home from the shop. Can you only imagine what would of happened if it got caught good while I am doing 70MPH on the freeway! Guess I am lucky in a way! By the way I did not have my oil changed!
I hope that none of you guys/gals ever have to go through what I have been through. I tried calling chrysler and all they want to do is say were sorry! I called the dealership this mourning and told the head shop manager of the dealer ship that the next time he will ever see me there is when I come by to throw this FU**ING oil wrench at him!
I honestly dont know what do and I seek my friends here on the website to give me some guidence, opinions, and ideas. Monday I am going shopping for lawyers to help resolve this issue and all of the previous ones.

Thanks guys,
Jeremy

DANG... if you didn't have bad luck.... you wouldn't any luck at all.

You or your lawyer should get in connect with the area DC rep. And tell him all that has happened and that you will be suing. That should get you some action at the dealership. Keep us posted.

I've been reading your posts and I wanted to give you a little advice. I work for a dealership in the service department. (Fortunately or Unfortunately not for Dodge since I own two of them) The district rep is definitely a good idea. I also know that Chrysler reps are hard to get a hold of. I've been down this very same path with a plymouth breeze.(3 transmissions,2 heads and for the finale 1 year later the head gasket started leaking oil!!!) Anyway be persistent...However do not let temper get the best of you with a district rep.Remember you did buy a used vehicle.(that's going to be there ace in the hole). If you light up a district rep your on your own. He's the guy that at times can make or break your situation. Make sure to call both the better business and Chrysler customer service! As for trans being painted I would call your extended warranty company and see if they reserve the right to use "used" equipment aka junkyard parts. Some warranty companies do reserve the right to use these parts most of the time against the techs wishes. Most extended warranty company will also have copies of parts and labor charged out for each specific claim. Anyway I had a jeep one time that I installed 3 transmissions before getting one that did not make any noise. I only got payed for installing 1 and ended putting in four. Anyway just wanted to give you some advice coming from a service advisor and at times a technician..keep us posted and it's techs and dealerships like this one that give us a bad name!!!!!

Thanks guys for all the help and suggesions. Dan, this tranny was covered under the main chrysler powertrain warrenty. I was able to glimps a bill to them as I was getting my paperwork, the bill was 3 pages and the totals were 5000.00 alone on the first page. So to be honest, I dont even think chrysler knows! My truck was under restriction for all of the tranny issues. So I was told that they "dealership" needed to contact the Rep, to get his approval. They said that they couldent wait any longer so they would pull it on there own. The story can go on and on but it kills me every time I think about it. Yea almost forgot the tranny is now leaking in 3 spots and slips like crazy when I come to a stop and go situation. I have an appointment with a local TRANNY shop to get all this inspected and documented on wednesday on paper from a tranny specialist. Hopefully I can get ahold of a lawyer today! I realized that my temper will do nothing but hurt my situation so I will keep my cool and do everything through a lawyer. I will keep you guys posted. Once again I thank all the readers of this post for all there questions and all there suggestions!
