speedo doesn't move until 20 mph

:help: I have a 98 Ram with 5.2 and automatic. The speedometer stays on zero until I reach 20mph, and then jumps to 20 and is OK from that speed and beyond. The same thing happens when I slow down...as soon as the speedo reaches 20 or less, it drops to zero. Scantool registers the same result so I'm sure it's not the speedometer head. I replaced the VSS and checked connections, etc, but still no low speed indication. Any suggestions?

I just saw something like that. I'll look around and see what I can find.

It is your low speed sensor dropping out, I just had mine replaced cost me around 130 at the dealership. I have a 2001 ram 5.2. Hope this helps.

sure was

Yep. It was the sensor on the differential housing. After replacing with a new one from Chrysler ($41 and about 10 minutes of work), everything is back to normal....ABS light and brake warning light went out and the speedo registers below 20mph. I checked continuity with a VOM and the old unit was open. :D

Thanks for the info! My '99 Diesel has had issues with the ABS and brake lights, the speedo, and most recently the fuel gauge. The speedo began as the same "0-20" dead spot, and became progressively worse, until it stopped working completely for a few hundred miles. Then it mysteriously returned for speeds over 45 MPH. The fuel gauge was perfect until it suddenly registered a continuous "F". At the next stop, it registered a continuous "E", from which it never recovered. I can't find anything wrong with the PC board on the IP. The gauge ground seems OK. Fuel sending unit? Any connection to the speedo problem?
