from a report on the Car Connection:

Picking what type of doors you want on your new car - regular ones or sliding - could eventually be part of the buying experience.

Engineers from Michigan have unveiled a new sliding technology which gets rid of the ugly rail down the side of the vehicle. They've cleverly hidden the track on the inside of the car, which means the door type has no impact on the overall exterior design. And according to Dura, the company behind the innovation, that will lead the way for auto makers to let buyers choose whether they want sliding or standard doors.

A spokesman revealed getting rid of the unsightly rail and hiding the two electric motors that power the open/close mechanism was the biggest challenge. "We've succeeded, and it means our doors can be offered as an option on a car and you could even swap to the other sort later. We believe our system would be of interest to disabled people or the limousine makers who want easy access for their VIP passengers," he said. Talks with car companies are going on, though the technology is still around two years away from being a production reality
