I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with a Corporate 9.25” axle. Here are some pictures of the ring and pinion and spider gears. Can you tell from these if I need to replace them?

No, you cannot tell by pictures like these. They actually look fine, no chipping or spalling, but measuring backlash would be a better way to determine how worn they are. Were these gears making noise?

No. I think the pinion bearing is shot. The rear end makes a noticeable whining/tunnel sound when pressing the accelerator.
I’ve never replaced ring or pinion and their associated bearings and seals. I have read up on backlash, I don’t have a tool and need to figure out if it’s a cheap tool to buy, since this is a onetime use
