Is it possible to replace the rear main seal on a 318 with the engine and transmission still in the car?

The 318 uses a split rear main. You have to remove the oil pan, oil pump, and the rear main bearing cap to get at it. The bottom half is easy because it's in the main bearing cap. The top half is a bit harder because you have to use a stiff wire to push the old one out and around the top of the crankshaft.

I believe you can loosen the two motor mounts and lift the engine high enough to gain clearance for the pan removal without separating the tranny. You will have to take out the air cleaner housing to give you enough lifting clearance.
