This problem started a couple months ago in that when I go down a not so smooth road or street or RR tracks it feels like there is something loose in the steering column. You can feel it in the steering wheel. I checked the steering shaft where it comes through the firewall and you can move the shaft up and down about 1/4". Is there a bearing or bushing that is prone to wearing out that would cause this? I didn't know if this is typical or not? This is on a 2000 1500 Ram 4WD ext. cab with 43K on it. :)

1/4" does seem excessive, but I'm not 100% sure what the specs. are. Have checked the other steering/chassis components? Such as ball joints, tie rods, etc.?
