First of all I'm new to the forum. I had a 2002 2500 cummins 4x4 back in the day. I was driving commercial for a long time. I wish I could buy a newer 2500 cummins but the prices are really high on my island. So I'm looking at buying a 2008 quad cab short bed 4x4 5.7l 3.92diff with tow haul mode.

Sorry in advance but I get so many different answers I need some help here...

This question is not if the vehicle is capable (I have no doubts of that). My question is what is legal?

So, I've got a 25' boat to haul around town (ramp 1 is 10 miles) and across island (ramp 2 is 111 miles one way).
Boat dry is 3000#
175 gal gas 1000#
Outboard. 500#
Gear batts. 500#
Trailer. 1200#

Call it 6500# towing weight may end up 7200 when I upgrade to twins...tongue weight is roughly 10% of trailer per seller. 650ish lbs.

Truck:
Me and 1 pass 350#
Gas 30 galls. 180#

Truck gvwr 6700, believe gcvwr is 10.7k# and max trailer is 8500#.... values from ram bodybuilder. It's for sale on a nearby island and can't see sticker yet...

Thanks for help...may need to just pay double for a cummins but money's money. Right?

As far as the 5.7 truck I think you will be fine towing as you describe. Legally however only you can determine that issue. Generally the law says basically what the mfg says as to load weights. But you have to check with your local officials. The truck should tow fine, but your fuel mileage will really suck, probably well under 10, maybe as low as 5 or 6?? I used to pull a toy hauler with a 4.7 gasser (not a Mopar) and on one trip heading home against a strong head wind made it about 60 miles on 3/4 of a tank of gas. That trip ended my towing with gas, same toy hauler same load in it diesel now 12 - 15mpg with it.
