wanted to see what you all think. sometime this summer, planning on putting on a little lift with new tires. i was thinking of a 3" lift with BFGoodrich 33", 10.5" wide tires. Think it will look good or should i get new wheels as well and go with 12.5" wide tires? I'm trying to do this without having to change gears. can't afford it all. sound good, any changes, suggestions?

that combo will be an easy fit for a 3" lilft. where did you find 10.5" wide tires for 33's?

you can easily fit 12.5" wide tires in there though.

my 33"x12.5" tires are borderline with exist. gears (3.92's) and a 360 v8. but i do live in the foothills of colorado, so i see alot of mtn. driving.

i didn't find them, i was just curious. the problem is that i would like to keep the stock rims so i'm not sure if the 12.5" would fit like they should. i've only got the 5.2L with 3.55 gears. Basically i want to bump the truck up a little bit without making me broke.

285's

I just put 285 r75 16's on my 01 Ram 4x4 SB 5spd. Speed is off by 5 mpg, but they filled in the wheel wells great, and didn't rob me of power, as I also have a 318.

Same set up as mine. 3" SJ w/ bfg 255/85R16 (33.3") on stock 7" wheels. I think it looks great. Get a lot of compliments from people where ever I stop.

aren't 255/75R16 only about 31" tall?

edit: nevermind.....i'm retarded, not thinking clearly tonight, plus i hate this metric stuff and am still trying to figure it out.

Harley Ram,
I also meant to ask you if those tires stuck out past the fenders at all? i don't really like the trucks running around that have the tires sticking out like 6 inches, but i do like them when they stick out just a little

ok, so i've got it narrowed down to 2 different options. either way i'm going to get the skyjacker 3" lift.

#1 keep the stock rims and go with BFGoodrich 285/75r16
#2 buy new 16x8 rims (even though i don't want to) and put on BFGoodrich 295/75r16

i'm not really concerned a great deal with the tires rubbing because i don't do a whole lot of offroading. however, if the tire is going to wear real bad then i'll go ahead and get new rims. i also want the tire to stick out about 2" outside the fender. i just don't want it to stick out a rediculous amount. what do you all think?

I went w/ the 255/85's to get the tire height I wanted w/o buying new wheels. Yes they do measure over 33".
the BFG website shows this tire to be mounted on a 7" wheel.
My fenders and rockers get a lot of abuse from slung mud, rocks and what ever else gets close to these tires and I for one would not want the extra abuse of a tire outside the wheel well punishing my doors, hood and everything else. You pick up a rock on the highway and it gets thrown forward, you might very well catch it with your own windshield. Been there, got the chip! with other rides on open rubber.
No fender flares, no wider tires.
My 2 cents.

Stay on the road so nobody has to pull you out of the mud or up a hill.

How could that happen? It sounds impossible. A rock that gets thrown forward by your tires fast enough to make it up and over to your windshield wouldn't have enough relative velocity to chip the glass since it would be traveling forward at approx. the same speed as your vehicle. I would just harmlessly bounce off (unless you have monster treads capable of throwing a big rock up)

Usually rocks that chip glass need some relative velocity to make an impact. I would estimate that the rock would need at least 30mph++ relative velocity to have any chance of chipping a windsheild.

Sorry, I should have said up and forward.

even if you launched a rock forward, it would still be traveling at approximately the same speed as your vehicle. I still don't think that you could chip your windshield in this manner. In order for this to occur, you would need to shoot the rock out of your tires at a high enough speed for it to get far enough ahead of your vehicle, and then reverse course and build up enough speed to hit your glass and chip it. This just doesn't seem very likely due to the dynamics involved.

Is it possible that there was another car that threw up a rock? Were there any vehicles on the road in front of you?

Easy Canyon! Your sounding like a trial attorney.
Here's what I know. I was driving on a dirt road, went out on a highway, heard the ol' tap-tap-tap we have all heard, then a brief moment of silence and then CRACK!
No vehicles in front of me, nobody around. Just a few guys in a my old Jeep not believing what just happened.
To calculate this we need to know: the RPM of the tire at the time of launch, diameter of the tire, the angle of discharge, size, density and shape of the eledged projectile, wind velocity and direction, my speed of travel or rate of acceleration, so on and so forth.
The vehicle was a '76 CJ-5 with 31X10.50X15's by Hercules. They set out about 2" from the fender flares
Nothing is impossible.
Didn't mean to get any body rattled.

hard to imagine, but it must have been. Sounds like bad luck. Sorry to doubt you.

maybe you launched the rock forward and it richocheted off the ground in front of you and bounced back real fast. Sounds like a wierd unlucky experience.

If you were to go with 285/75/r16 you could most likely fit them stock. I have 285's on my Ram with no rub and stock wheels. I have trxus MT's and they are a little smaller then the last set of 285's that I had on it, but I had no rub on either set of tires. Just a thought.
