OK someone clear this one up for me. I'm about to cut out the stock exhaust on my 01' 1500 318, and install my own "supertruck" style exhaust that exits in front of the wheel. Now my question is if the stock pipe coming off the cat is a 2 1/2", then AFTER the muffler expands to 3", how could that possibly be benefical. To my knowledge a restriction is a restriction it doesn't matter what size you tail pipe is. BUT all the aftermarket exhaust are cat-back 3". Is this just cosmetic or will expanding from 2 1/2" to 3" after the cat {before the muffler} really help move the gases?

I would only go with 3" if you eventually plan on upgrading the rest of your exhaust(hi flow cat, Y pipe and headers)

I agree 2.5 is fine, once the exhaust hits the first restriction, the rest mean very little

Depends, if your stock and only plan on doing 2 or 3 performance mods, stay with the 2.5" on your 318. If you already have a few mods and plan to really go nuts, go with the 3" :D
