I really hate neons, but dayum...after some limo tint and new tail lights, mine is already starting to look better and better. If I get a good drop and some rims...it'll be pimpin! As this being my first post, I want to ask you what I should do to my neon. I got it cheap from my sister so I had to "un girly" it with the tint and tail lights, but it still is a bit high for my preference and I'd really like rims.

What are your suggestions? So far the only thing I've done performance wise is added a short ram intake system I got off E-bay, No exhaust or headers yet cause I'm short on cash. As I've said I got limo tint all around, which looks really sweet on a white car, aftermarket tail lights, and some blue wanna-be HID lights. I'm also looking into some M3 mirrors with LED lights on the sides, and maybe a new gauge cluster

I wanna lower the car bout 2", but I'm not sure if I should go with coil overs or springs. Eventually I'd like rims, hopefully 17" if they'll fit, but rims aren't first priority right now. I just don't wanna lower it so that I can only get 16" rims, cause I really would prefer 17s on a 40 size tire.

Oh by the way, I really dig the newer SRT Neons

If you hate the NEON's why the hell do you want to put money into it.
The first few things most people get fopr their NEON is.

1. CAI (cold air intake).
2. UDP (underdrive pulley).
3. 55 mm throttle body, or 60 mm (the 55 is more common).
4. If you have a SOHC motor you need an exhaust.( the stock DOHC muffler adds a few ponies to the SOHC) and it's cheap.NOt to mention it dont sound like RICE.
5. An MOPAR PERFORMANCE computer, or an AFX computer if you have an automatic,Mopar does not make one for the automatic.
6. 8.5 mm plug wires

just a few of the basic mods people start with.

Does the front of the car look like it has a stuppid smile! Mine did! I took some masking tape and some paint and painted eyelids on my head lights. The smile was transformed into a snarl. If your short ram CAI is not located down below the battery tray I would find one that goes there or mod the current one to go there. You cannot expect much from it if it's sucking in hot air from above the exhaust manifold. I would lower it maybe 1.5 inches at most. Coilovers probablly being the best bet.And if you want to keep your QUICKNESS you dont want anything bigger than a 16 inch wheel.SRRY.
GOOD LUCK with your project

I don't really want to go too crazy, just some basic cheap mods to make it quicker and not so lame looking. I wish I had the tint guys put some tint on the headlights to give it some eyelids, I don't think I'd go anyother way cause paint would chip and tape just plain looks ghetto. I'd also rather have heavier 17s because since this is an automatic, I won't be taking it to any tracks or street races.

I'll probably replace the spark plugs and wires first since they need replaced anyway. What are some good brands?

I might sell the car in about a year, so everything I do I'm trying to make it good for a resell. That means I don't want some insane stuff that'll make it a pain to smog. Quick question, can you smog a car with performance exhaust? Probably a dumb question, but I've never actually had exhaust on any of my cars....just gone ghetto unbolted style, but hey, what do you expect? I'm from the Inland Empire :D

Ok, let me figure this one out. There is paint all over the car front, back, sides ect.
And you think that window tint is better for eyelids. ID RATHER HAVE A CHIP IN THE PAINT THAN A PEELING BLOWING IN THE WIND CHUNK OF TINT THAT WILL WITH NO DOUBT CHIP AND PEEL FASTER THAN PAINT.Why not go to your local sign shop if you dont like the paint and get you a couple peices of vinyl that matches the car and make them out of the vinyl. This would be the right way and easier than paint or tint.
What is so ghetto about color matched paint? ghetto would be dollar store spray cans.
I used my air brush with Auto paint (mixed to match flame red) then I clear coated it with reall clear coat. IT LOOKS AWSOME! NOT GHETTO.LOL

The rims are your choice if you dont race 17's will be fine, you maty not be able to lower it a full 2 inches tho.Maybe 1.5 at most with 17's.Anything more than that without doing a suspension upgrade will most likely bottom out.(NOT GOOD).

You can get a performance exhaust that is smog leagal,But for just a few bucks you can get a DOHC muffler and it will add a few ponies just by itself.
They flow better than the SOHC mufler and you can put it on and run dualls
off of it.

You don't like neons, AND you're going to sell it in a year. Sounds like a no brainer to me, keep the money in your wallet.

But if you must do a mod, I would buy a manual transmission and go from there.

Ummm, I can't seem to make a mental connection between:

"spend my money to mod it up" and "I hate the Neon and am going to sell it within a year". ;)

I guess nobody got the sarcasm from my post...well anyway even though I plan to sell it, that doesn't mean I will. I hate car payments and don't really want anymore after this car is paid off, so I might just decide to keep it. Besides, it's not a bad car, certainly better than the 87 Honda Prelude I had before! But I don't want to do something that'll be a turn off for most buyers if I do decide to sell it, like shaved door handles are tight...but a lot of people wouldn't want to use a remote to open their door.

I wasn't really saying painting the headlights was ghetto, I meant putting tape on them is. I use to know a guy that did ghetto stuff like that and had masking tape all over his headlights to make them look like aftermarket lights....but it just looked really trashy. If the paint doesn't chip then that'd be good....but I just assumed it would because headlights don't seem like the best surface to paint on....just my guess.

If and when I lower it, I want to replace the shocks too so it rides well. Anybody know of some good brands? I want a smooth ride, but I don't want to be bottoming out...especially if I drop it a couple inches. I think I will go for coilovers, because after thinking about it for a while, I'd really like this car to sit on the ground....but obviously some days I might want to have it ride higher.

One last thing, I ordered some M3 mirrors with led turn signals on them, they were pretty cheap off Ebay so I'm hoping they don't look cheap. I'll find out in about a week.

Now your talking like a neon enthusiast. LOL
The tape was for keeping the paint off the rest of the light(overspray) and it keeps a good line.I sanded my old yellow lights and my paint is sticking like glue.

Cant help you with the shocks. srry

I might try painting on the headlights, did you use clearcoat also or just paint? Also, how did you keep a good line at sanding as to not sand down the parts that wouldn't be painted? Or does it really matter if the sanding is all the way to the line where the paint is to be laid? Not much of a painter here, but I might give it a try. At night when your lights are on does any light shine through the paint? What color did you use? And do you have any pictures of the front of your car?

If you're going to drop your car with coilovers, be prepared to spend some cash! The one's you see on ebay are junk.

I don't know about 2nd gen neons, but the cheapest "reasonable" coilover for a 1st gen goes for about $1100.

I sanded the whole damn head light. The first gen Neons have a problem turning yellow. I used 800 grit and worked my way up to 2000 grit paper. This was the second time I done this to remove the yellow off the lights. I used color matched paint (flamered) and yes I did clear coat it. I used my air brush instead of a spray can.
I dont think a spray can will give you as good a look as the air brush.

To answer your question yes at night the light shines thru it. That sucks but I haven't been pulled over for it yet. I think that vinyl will do better keping the light behind it. BUT I think that you will have a hell of a time trying to get those points sticking out on the head lights to line up and look right thru the vinyl. You'ld need alot of patience and a template to do that with vinyl.
I need to get new pics of my car but my camera is broken.(SHIT) If you have a freind with an airbrush let him paint them.I think spray cans may get you that GHETTO look.
And remember I used actuall automotive paint and clear coat.GOOD LUCK , and let us know what you decide.

That's what's keeping me away from lowering my car, plus I don't want to eat my tires up so I'd need a camber kit too. What are some good coilover brands?

I might wait on the headlights thing, don't have an airbrush, or know anyone that has one. How do you know if your car is 1st gen or 2nd? One of my headlights looks like its starting to turn yellow, but I thought most car headlights do that over time from water getting inside?

1st gen neon's are before the body style change 95-99.
2nd gen 00-05

You have a second generation neon. The plastic is cheap on the head lights and it turns yellow after a while. If you want the tint on there go buy you a box of tint and get busy!!!! LOL I am sure out of a roll you could cut you out a few eyelids. And if it dont take the whole roll to get it right make a few extras. You may want to replace em
after they wear a while.

That was me. Where did you get a name brand fully functional and performing set of coil overs for $200? I've never seen an inexpensive coilover out perform a set of Konis. At the same time I've never seen a true coil over setup under perform a Koni setup.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to know.

You're not talking about the skunks are you?

no im not talking about the skunk coil-overs, i have a set of gp sports coil-overs
Which are similar to bomz, skunk, or any other ebay coil over.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Try looking at a K-Sport or Ground Control for a neon. They are a night and day difference compared to any of those listed above.
