is there a code in the vin # that can tell you which rear end gear you have from the factory?
is there any "easy" ways of finding out if your used truck has had the gears altered? (pulling off cover, counting gears?)
thanks.

Easiest way to tell is to look at the label either stuck on the underside of the hood or the radiator support (or some are inside the glovebox) that details the original build. There should also be a tag under one of the diff cover bolts with the ratio on. To see if it's been changed you could always do the old trick, chalk a mark on the prop shaft, jack one wheel up, turn it two times and count the number of rotations of the prop.
I don't think there's anything in the vin you can decode, but you should be able to get a build sheet from a dealer.
