What is the best way to look for play in the baljoints? I think that this may be the problem but would like to check myselfe before its off to the dealer.

Jack up a front tire and use a metal bar to lever up on the bottom of the tire (place one end on the ground under the truck and the other end running out under the tire, so that it is perpendicular to the centerline of the truck) and watch for movement in the ball joints.
It's easier to have someone to press up on the tire as you watch.
