Helicoil Kit

I was working on my front shocks over the weekend and when I backed the bolt out (the one on the front drivers side on the lower control arm) I noticed that the threads were pretty well stripped. I also noticed a lot of metal came out of the control arm. I tried a new bolt but it wouldn't tighten. So, it looks as though the threads on the lower control arm are stripped too.

I want to install a helicoil kit but I haven't done it before and I don't know what size to get. Has anyone done it or know what I need to get? The help is appreciated as I took it to a shop today and they said they couldn't get the helicoil (of course they have had my truck all day too). But they only tried to get it from the Dodge dealership.

I don't know what size, but you should be able to get it at Pep-Boys, or other parts stores. You may need to take the bolt from the other side with you to match up the threads. Once you get the correct size, it's not hard to repair the threads as long as you use the correct size bit and die and you take your time. Good luck with it.

When you buy the helicoil kit, you need to bring the bolt with you to match up the size of the helicoil you need to get. You will need to get a drill bit for that helicoil, then tap the hole with the corresponding tap bit that matches the outside thread of the helicoil, once done you install the helicoil with the tool supplied until it is flush. Remove installation tool and you are good to go. Note, use good machine oil to lube when drilling and tapping.

They sell them in kits with everything you need, drill, tap and helicoil. Match up thread size with the other good bolt. When using the tap, use a tap handle. If you try using a small wrench it will enlarge the hole as you turn the tap.

Thanks for the advice. I have seen the kits so I think I'll go that route just to get everything at once.

Just to rant: I went to the repair shop to pick up my truck tonight after hours. When I got there I found it wide open with the keys in the ignition turned to the on position. I was not happy. At least it started. Bad news is on the way home the bolt came out of the lower control arm so now my shock is just hanging there.
