I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport .The suspension is stock and is a 2WD . It handles nicely around corners, but it has a rock hard suspension every bump is felt, even the little pebbles in the road . any help would be appreciated. Thanks ,Rob
My 2001 2WD LARAMIE SLT 1500 QC is the same way. I know I have to change out the tires (previous owner put E-range GY's on it), and, given my loads/towing are both intermittent and light, this what I'm thinking of trying:
Remove rear overload spring
Install ROADMASTER overload
rear drop shackles
rear antiroll bushings
poly antiroll bushings f/r
Tires are likely to be MICHELIN LTX M&S in 255/70-16. Remember that tires with a narrow footprint and plenty of sidewall (and max pressure ratings of 35-41 psi cold) are the best choice for a truck.
Current shocks are MONROE Reflex (likely 30m-plus on them) and they are not up to controlling this spring package with any sophistication. I imagine the previous owner wanted a "better' ride as well (he used truck as a commuter), but these shocks are low-quality and the butt-o-meter knows it.
Sometimes, the "right" mods can redistribute the hit (compression) and make it more palatable. I recently changed our '01 XJ to poly antiroll bushings, OME shocks and taller, wider tires (same sidewall height, though). The combo gave me the best of both worlds in this lightweight, straight axle vehicle: hit a touch harder on little stuff at low speeds, but you didn't even have to slow down for speed bumps anymore (take them at 30+ instead of signs saying 20 mph). Freeway was far better, a real road car now. (Of course, totalled a month later.)
Best shocks are the key, and no one makes better ones than KONI. After tires nothing else comes close for changing "roadability". They can really change the whole impression one has.
Anti-roll bars with faster acting poly bushings can help redistribute the load. I also had a 5000-lb car until recently (71 Chrysler) that this approach helped.
Hopefully, someone else will step in with what worked for them.
The "other" solution being contemplated is softer leafs/coils with bigger antiroll bars front and rear. This is dependent on extra-strong endlinks for the antiroll bars, so it may not be the way I go.
Avoid poly spring bushings as they transmit every road imperfection.
