Ive searched, and searched on this site and all i come up with is people switching gears for larger tires. I want to keep the stock height and go with a lower gear. Stock is 3:55, im wanting 4:11 or 4:56. Any suggestions or comments? Will it be that big of a difference?

You will see improved acceleration, and it will tow and haul loads with a little more ease (at least in the lower rpm ranges). But, you will also run at a higher RPM when you are at highway speeds, so you will use a little more gas.

I will be getting my pickup back today. I went from 3.55 to 4.11 (so I can run a larger tire, and for towing). But, I still have 265/75/16's on it at the moment (slightly larger then the stock 245/75/16, but pretty close). I won't be getting the bigger tire on it for a few more weeks. I can let you know how it feels and drives with 265/75's and 4.11's.

Hi,
I have been following this thread, and was wondering what your result were with the 265's and 4.11's. Did you burn more gas or stay about the same?
Thanks

When I got mine back with 4.11 and 265/75/16, I definetly used more gas, and was running at such a high RPM at highway speeds, I didn't really venture up over 55 very much. at 65, I was easily doing over 3000 rpm. Then, I changed my tire to 285, and it brought it right back down to about what it was stock, maybe slightly higher rpm (which is fine with me becasue I have more power now).

In my opinion, I would not want to run a 4.11 with 265 tires. I think a 3.92 would be a good gear for that tire size.

Thanks for the reply! 3000 rpm's at 65 seems really high. Does it seem more powerfull with the 4.11 285 combo than it did before the swap?

That's crazy, with a 265/70/17 and 4.10 in my 3G I am at about 1800 at 65. now I have 315/70/17 and at 70 I'm about 1900. I want to drop to a 4.56 or 4.88.

It might not have been that high (I don't have a tac, so I am just guessing), but it was very very high, much to high for my comfort.

With your new combo, did you lose mpg , gain, or stay about the same? Sorry for so many questions :)

I lost less then 2 mpg switching to the 4.11's and 33" tire, but I also did a Hypertech programmer and 180 t-stat at the same time, so not sure what just the gear/tire combo would result in.
