Fluctuating RPM

1612 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Dune
I have a 98 Dodge Dakota Sport with the 5.2L V8 Magnum. I bought it at 100,000 miles about three months ago and have since noticed that the tachometer fluctuates constantly. it doesn't matter if i'm slowly accelerating or on cruise control at 40, the tachometer looks like it's having a seizure. They're not huge fluctuations, mind you, only a few hundred RPM either way, but i'm sure it can't be good for my gas milage and I have no idea what is causing it. I've heard a faulty sensor and dirty fuel injectors suggested so far. I run a can of fuel injector cleaner once a month so i'm not convinced that that's it, but maybe. Any other suggestions or similar problems?

Mine did that off and on. I was told it was the TPS. I put in a new one and it hasn't done it since.
A TPS should solve your problem. They run $35-65 depending on the parts store. For future reference if you have surging RPM's at idle you can swap out the IAC motor for a new one. Another easy 10min fix. As you bought the truck used, I'd get ALL the fluids changed before they cause you grief down the road! And a tune up as well, for better piece of mind. As far as engine cleaners go, seafoam does a good job of getting rid of built up deposits in the engine. If you are a lazier person auto-rx is another good cleaner on the market that you just add to the crankcase oil :)
might be your TPS is bad or you might need to clean or replace your IAC. both located on your TB. also manualy clean your TB. those can cause rpm flux.
thanks a lot. i'll let you know if the problem is still there after i'm done.
Mine does the same thing....let us know.
