My '97 Ram has a strange problem. When I try to start it in the morning or at other times too, I turn the key to the start position and I hear a "clunk" with NO turn over. On about the third time of going through this routine, it turns over and starts just like normal.

It runs great after that and it has never stranded me. However, this is my daughter's daily driver and I don't want it to stop dead some day when I am not around.

Any suggestions ?

I have had the battery load checked (1 year new), the alternator has had an output check and I have checked the battery cables and the connections at the starter with no visible signs of problems.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks :help:

Thanks for your input. I had a suspition that the starter may be the issue but since it is intermittant, I don't want to spend a whole bunch of $$ and fail to fix it.

Thanks,

Matt

I did the starter on my old 1500 for under $140. These are high torque gear reduction jobs but they seam to last a while. Mine did the same thing at about 120k miles, not a bad run. Good Luck... Chris
