I'm getting ready to change the differential fluid in my truck which is a 2006 Mega Cab and had a couple of questions. From what I read in the post and seen in the pictures, there isn't a gasket on the 1500 but according to a posting under the pictures, someone stated that there is a gasket that comes on the 2500 and 3500's. Since the Mega Cab is a 1500 on a 2500 frame, is there a gasket there, or do I just need the sealant as the pictures describe? Also, how do I know which front axel I have between a c205fd, 9 1/4 AA or 9 1/4 AA EL? What does the EL stand for and is Trac-Lok an option on these trucks? It seems like I'm stuck between a 1500 and 2500 and am not sure which way to turn as far as maintenance. I've included the build sheet that Dodge sent me. Thanks in advance,

Mike

10.5 rear axle, and TracLok too. I don't know. My 9.25 sealed up just fine with the black RTV. I'm kinda thinking about using it from now on (the Army uses RTV for EVERYTHING, maybe I will too now, lol).

Although it's a "1500" it's considered a "1500 HD" and is still equipped with the 8-lug AA's (American Axles). You will not need any RTV to complete your differential services......you can simply re-use the existing gaskets.

Dodge actually uses RTV for many things, even some wheel cylinders on certain year cars have RTV around the perimiter of the part where it was bolted to the backing plate. RTV is a preferred way to seal diff covers by most mechanics. If you ahve a gasket and re-use it you can still add a lite coating for extra insurance.

even though it has 1500 badging .... the mega cab uses the 2500 frame and suspension (8 Lug)
so since it is esentially a 2500 in hiding re-use the gasket but I agree with slammed1 get some RTV for re-assurance but look to buy a new gasket for your next change

Lots of guys have been able to re-use the OEM gasket 4--5 times without any problems at all.

that is good to know ... I dont have a gasket on mine and when I have used RTV on gaskets like valve covers they couldnt be resused but that could be cause we put more then just a little and the diffrence in heat where the valve covers would get alot hotter then the rear end.
