I've read a lot on this site but have never posted. In the past few weeks I've heard the new Duramax and Powerstroke Diesel engines. I have a 2004.5 Cummins in my 2500 and I thought it was much more quieter than the other 2, but I'm almost thinking it's the loudest of the 3. Have any of you heard all 3? Which do you think is quieter?

When I pull up to a powerstroke at a stop light, I can't hardly hear myself think. The duramax comes in second to loudness, and my CTD, IS, in fact, the quietest of them all. I think it has a lot to do with the common rail injection.

Yup, thats what I was referring to when I mentioned the common rail injection. The 3rd gen Ram CTD's use common rail injection, which makes it significantly quieter than previous generation trucks.

I work with 2 guys with PSD's and one guy that just got a new GMC with a Duramax. The Duramax is the quietest inside the cab and outside, too quiet in my opinion. My CTD is next and the PSD's is by far the loudest.

I would have to say the new Duramaxx is the quietest. I always hear them drive by me where I work and you can hardly even tell its a diesel when its idling.

The Powestrikes are by far the loudest, you can hear them coming from a ways away, the Duramax is definitely a quiet engine, haven't heard it too much so I can't really say too much about them. The Cummins sounds the most like my favorite engine, the Caterpillar C12 found in the USMC's MTVR, the turbo whistle, and engine growl are just awesome, it might not be as loud as I want but I can change that.

Don't really know about the PSD, but strictly speaking in terms of volume level, my buddy's Duramax is pretty close to his brother's '03 CTD, and my '05 CTD...

The 6.0 powerjoke in my 04 F450 service truck is very loud. When I start it up in the morning to warm it up I can hear it while I'm in the house getting ready to leave for the day. I was at a Dodge dealer & had the vultures start up a "600" Cummins since I hadn't heard one run yet & they are very quiet compared to the 6.0. I was talking to a coworker on my cell phone with a hands free while the Cummins was running & he didn't even hear it running untill I opened the hood. My bro in law just bought a 2500 GMC with a Duramax & it's pretty quiet.

My buddy has a 2005 GMC 2500 4x4 with the Duramax, and he drove my new ride yesterday and thought the Ram was quieter.

After driving his, I think I might agree. Regardless, they are very close.

The old duramax were loud but the 05's are comparable to an 05 Cummins

At 50,000 miles my CTD is probably 1.5 times as loud as it was when new. It's gotten progressively louder with time. I like it better now then before but my neighbor has a 2nd gen and mine sounds like nothing next to his....

I canned a 04 6.0L Ford for my new 05 Dodge 3500 CTD and I can tell you, the Joker is WAY louder than the new Cummins. I traded it b/c Ford wouldn't/ couldn't fix it and I don't have the time/money/patience/will to take them to court over it, so I dumped it and all my money on the new Dodge. Bottom line: Idle, quieter/ Highway cruising, quieter/ Full power, quieter/ Decel, quieter. AND smoother power during accel is nice too.

After I bought my Dodge I decided to go and test drive a Ford and a Chevy just to see what they were like. I didn't even finish the test drive on either before I found at least 6 things I hated about each truck. I have owned my CTD for over a year and love it so far. The PSD has the most annoying cackle of any diesel I have ever seen. The 2004 PSD I test drove seemed like it didn't even have a but of noise insulation on the firewall I heard every rattle that engine made on the test drive. My CTD actually got quieter in the cab when I replaced the stock muffler with the Dynomax muffler I have now.

You guys have got to be kidding. There is nothing louder and more obnoxious sounding than listening to some guy fire up his Dodge diesel at 6 in the morning so he can beat it to the next campground. I can hear a Dodge from a block or 2 away.

The newer CTDs are quieter but Dodge doesn't have bragging rights here.

The only way to know is to measure the decibles inside the cab at idle, cruising, pulling, etc.

I love my CTD, wouldn't own anything else, but it really gets old hearing about how completely rotten the Fords and Chevys are in every category except high price and breakdowns.
