Don Schumacher Racing driver Matt Hagan’s HEMI®-powered Dodge Charger R/T NHRA Funny Car wasn’t the only Mopar-powered race car to pay a visit to the winner’s circle at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Joliet, Ill. on Sunday, June 6. James Caro of Houma, La. also drove his 2004 Dodge Stratus to victory in the NHRA Sportsman Comp Eliminator class at Route 66 Raceway.

Caro posted his Mopar-fueled Stratus No. 26 after three rounds of qualifying. He defeated Mike DePalma, Matt Harris, Adam Hickey and Robert Bailey before knocking off David Rampy in the final with an 8.124-second elapsed time at 162.35 mph to Rampy’s 7.342/152.00 mark. Caro’s victory ended a 21-year gap between his previous national event win, in Houston back in 1989, the eighth-longest gap among all racers (Pro and Sportsman).

Next up for NHRA Sportsman racers is the 41st annual NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J., June 10–13.
