I have a 46RE tansmission from a 1999 Durango 5.9 4x4. The trans was leaking badly from the front. I pulled the trans and I can see that the shaft seal was leaking (torque converter seal). However, there was some fluid at the bottom of the oil pump housing too, which could simply be residual from the leaking seal. My question is, - is it common for the oil pump housing gasket & o-ring to leak? As equally common as the torque converter seal leak on a 46re?

Obviously I would like to avoid pulling the oil pump, seing how the service manual indicates some special tools are required. If i do pull the oil pump is it absolutely neccesary to use the special alignment pins to insert the pump, or can this be inprovised?

Update, - it was the tranny oil pump outer o-ring (circumference) that was leaking. Special tools not needed, - just a little ingenuity.

Overall, a major PITA job for a friggin leak.
