which gears are gonna be clear winner in the 1/4 mile on two identically modded trucks. I know 4.56 will be faster in the 1/8th but I want to know about the 1/4. which should I get for my truck? any input is greatly appreciated :rck:

If you are planning on headers, cam, heads and tq converter then I would do the 4.56 gears. They will get you into the powerband a little quicker and with you being a 4x4, you likely are running a taller tire than most of us 2wd guys. My truck came with 3.55's and I've changed them from 4.10 to 4.56 and now 4.88's. I like the 4.88's the best for my mods. Never fear the gear.... except maybe when gas is over $3.00 a gallon.

Tached real high on the highway eh? I was thinking of having 4.56s installed in my 2500 with stock 265 70 R17s for towing our 5th wheel. I calculate about 2400rpm in 4th gear .75 O/D at 70mph. This about what you saw? Was it objectionable with gear noise or driveshaft whurrrr?

You have 3.55 and if your not going to 35s or better in tires 4.10 would be a nice jump. I rode in a 2wd with 4.56 and 265 70 17 tires and I will say that thing took off!! It also tached real high on the highway because its only a about 31" tire
I wonder who THAT was?? :D

It's a 1500 (dunno if the different trannies have different end ratios). But with the stock 17's I'm running a shade over 30". I may need to recheck my diameter and double check it with the SC, but right now 70MPH nets me right around three grand on the tach. I'm always a few MPH off from the police radar trailers on the side of the highway. So maybe being off on tire height, coupled with the MPH being a little off, and having shorter tires can be fixed relatively easy. I just need the revs to come down a couple hundred....
