My 3.9l V6 (3 speed, no O.D.) is reluctant to downshift at certain speeds, even when you push the pedal to the floor. Below 40mph and above 60 mph it will, but not in between. It seems like the engine needs to achieve a higher RPM within a given gear before it will respond to the "floored pedal" downshift. I recently test drove a V8 and found it performed a downshift every time you floored it, that is what started me thinking. Someone told me they noticed that the V6's were like that. Any thoughts? Is this normal?
Thanks-

Have you tried adjusting the kickdown (throttle valve) cable? It could be out of adjusment.

Also periodic adjustments of the kickdown band and low reverse bands need to be made.

No, have not done that. I was not sure if I had a problem, or if it is just the nature of the thing.

I would think it would downshift when you punched it to the floor no matter what speed you were at.
