We Heard You: Uconnect Enhancements Rolling Out
by Jen Herman
October 14, 2013 9:01 AM
You speak, we listen. You want improved voice recognition technology. Done! You want better speed and accuracy. Got it!

Chrysler Group listens to Uconnect customers and has responded with a software update for vehicles equipped with Uconnect 8.4AN and 8.4A systems, including 2013 & 2014 Ram Trucks and SRT Vipers and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. The update is designed to enrich the Uconnect user experience by keeping the system as technically advanced as possible while making it all easier to use without added distractions.

For instance, customers that complete the update will receive the recently introduced “Easy Prompts” feature. Best of all, we are giving our customers a choice of how to update their vehicles, either at home or at the dealership, making it convenient and simple.

So, what does this mean for you? Uconnect users will see improved speed and accuracy, including advancements in voice recognition, navigation and audio quality.

The software update is available beginning Monday, Oct. 14.

After completing the software update, vehicle owners may notice:

System Performance is Quicker & Faster

Chrysler Group has improved the speed and accuracy of its Uconnect 8.4AN and 8.4A systems. The voice recognition technology, which enables drivers to use their voice to place and receive hands-free phone calls, change radio stations or music sources, send a personal text message, navigate to a destination and more, has been significantly improved.

Once behind the wheel, drivers that push either the voice recognition or phone button on the steering wheel will notice new audible chimes and prompts. These enhancements make the system even more intuitive.

Chrysler Group has also simplified the number of voice commands within its Uconnect systems to enhance accuracy and is introducing “Easy Prompts” to aid drivers. With Easy Prompts, the most important voice commands are made available to the driver on the 8.4-inch touchscreen display. Once the driver masters the system they can choose to turn the Easy Prompts feature off.

Press the Voice Recognition button on the steering wheel and the following Easy Prompts menu will appear.

Press the Phone button on the steering wheel and the following Easy Prompts menu will appear.

The Easy Prompts also are announced over the vehicle's audio system should the driver require help.

Customer Feedback Fuels and Drives Uconnect Improvements
Chrysler Group has been actively listening to its customers since introducing the newly evolved Uconnect systems last year. As a result, a variety of additional improvements have been included in this Uconnect software update. For instance, a few of the most noticeable include:

Drivers may notice that hands-free calling, routing to a destination and a range of other entertainment features, like Bluetooth audio streaming and SiriusXM Satellite Radio, are more accurate and easier to use.
Audio quality is also improved along with radio response times.
The number of phonebook contacts has increased from 1,000 to 5,000 and each contact can now have up to four telephone entries. The phonebook will also sync with the system even quicker.

To determine if your 2013-2014 Ram Truck, SRT Viper or Jeep Grand Cherokee qualifies for the Uconnect 8.4A & 8.4AN software update and to download instructions, visit DriveUconnect.com and click on Help & Support.

Select Your Brand (Either Ram/Jeep/SRT)

Click on “System Update”

You’ll be redirected to the Chrysler Group Uconnect Software Update Site where you will enter the last eight digits of your VIN and click on the “Do I Qualify” button to determine if your vehicle qualifies and if your Uconnect System will benefit from this software update.

Or, if you prefer to have the software update completed by a Dealer Service Technician, free of charge, simply reference the Uconnect 8.4A or 8.4AN software update when scheduling your appointment.

When you want Chrysler Group to improve your driving experience, always feel free to speak up. We are here and we are listening. Dodge Rox! Glad to hear this. My mother In-Law is buying a 2014 durango this week and it has the 8.4" in it. Anything to make it easier for her to use is a plus.

It would be nice for a 5.0 update. I can't use the voice recognition. Never knows what I am saying...

Here's some tips:

There's two steps to the download. First you have to install Akamai Netsession download manager client. (I wish companies would stop using these stupid things, you should not have to install software to download a file).

Next you have to download the actual file. I had to use IE, it didn't seem like chrome would ever allow it to download the actual file. With IE, you'll get a notification at the bottom of the screen, saying 'only secure content is displayed' Click the 'Show all Content' button, this should start the download.

You are ether downloading a zip (Mac) or self extracting zip (Windows). Both contain the same thing, a file called 'swdl.iso'

You do not need a 4GB key. The file is 562 MB. You should be able to use a 1GB key without a problem I used a 2GB key I had laying around. Clear off all the files on the key, and copy swdl.iso to it.

Once you've followed the instructions to make sure you can install the update (that you're not seeing the required service message) Turn your truck to 'run' and plug the USB key into the port in the console. Wait 1-2 minutes. You'll then see a notice on the screen asking if you want to update.

From there it takes about 15-20 minutes. The screen does some flashing at times, and will go black for a bit, the progress will stall occassionally. Don't worry, just wait.

Dodge, the download process could be a lot easier and better documented. You should not have warnings about displaying insecure content. Give users two links. One to installation instructions and one to the update. Make it clear what they are. Then give simple instructions to copy the file to the key. Make the process the same for whatever OS the user is on. It has been made artificially more complex than it needs to be.

Yesssssss, thanks for this post.

I have been living with crackly xm radio when listening to talk shows since day one. Regular music sounded fine, and radio station talk shows sounded fine... Only xm radio, non music sounded terrible. Ie.... A hockey game or basketball game, or espn radio , etc.... Sounded horrible.... This new update, I just did it fixed the problem. I'm so happy. My speakers sound great with voices now. No more pop crackle. All I can think of is that the bit rate on xm was compressed poorly or the uconnect was not uncompressing correctly before the update. Thanks for this link. Dodge talk kicks a$$.

Satellite radio reception sucks...

I never had an issue with satellite radio in my '08, unless I parked under a canopy or drove into my garage. This 2014 loses satellite reception when I drive on the north side of a tall building. I drove by our Costco, I was on the north side, which has NOTHING overhanging, or even near it, and lost reception. I drove by our shopping mall, on the north side, lost reception.

I finally got ahold of a Ram service technician today because me thermometer is about 15 degrees colder than the actual temp, and he told me there is a software update for the BCM to fix the thermometer being SO far off.

I have an update, but I cannot download the update. I have downloaded the installer, but I do not get anything for the software download. I just called Uconnect and they said they have had problems like this, so I am supposed to get a call within one business day from the tech department. I guess it is IE11 that is causing my problem.

Sorry... Encountered an Application Error

Hi there,
what's my problem? I already get the message above, I tried it in October, December and today. I always get this message and with every browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome) and every device (iPhone, Android Tablet, Windows PC). I have seen, that lots of users have the same problem. The answer will always be "then visit your dealership". But that's definitely not what I want. Can somebody help me? Probably with a download link? I want to have the newest Software for my uConnect 8.4AN, RAM 1500, 2013. I have 13.19 on my system.

Thank you so much!!

I got it to work using chrome. In chrome you will see a shield in the right hand corner. click on it and hit load unsafe scripts.

My last try: with "your freedom" to fake my country (canada) to USA, Chrome/Firefox/IE browser, activated "unsafe scripts" in Chrome... still the same. If there is somebody who can give it to me via a personal download link, I would be very happy...

Major problems with uconnect updater

I am unable to update or install the advertised enhancements. The website does not work. I installed the akamai manager but the download does not start. emailed customer support and they told me to call in. Called support and they could verify my VIN. The girl verified my truck with my name and zip but I couldn't make her understand that the website isn't working and I couldn't get her to just give me the download address. Hung up in frustration. I got another email from support telling me that they would like to help me but someone else has the download address and it's apparently a secret.
Whoever is running the uconnect website and support has managed to turn a simple software update into a major pain.

I tried it on my Mac using Chrome, and it didn't work. Then I tried again using safari, and it did work. Are you using one of the recommended browsers?

I tried it again on 3 different PCs with different Windows versions and browsers. Actually, it worked with some setups until that point, when the Akamai download manager is installed... but that's it. After installing Akamai, never a window for downloading the uConnect software appeared. I also tried it on my Win7 PC under a virtual XP machine... same result. There is no way to download the software. I'm extremely frustrated.
