2004 Ram differential backlash

I replaced the rear differential and ring and pinion. I need to know if backlash is set by pushing the ring gear front to rear or is is left to right?

Pinion depth is set with shims to move the pinion back and forth, backlash is set using the threaded adjusters on the sides. Assuming you have a 9.25 axle.

But which way is backlash checked. I know the adjusters tighten thru the axle shaft area. But is the ring gear side to side or forward and back.
Sounds like you are asking how to measure the backlash. May want to watch a few youtube videos, but basically you set up a dilal indicator with the tip on one of the ring gear teeth. Hold the pinion still and rotate the ring gear up untill the pinion gear stops it, note position of dial indicator, then rotate the ring gear down until the pinion gear stops it, and again note the position of the dial indicator. The motion is very slight, and you will see the range that the dial indicator travels in thousandths. Compare this measurement to spec to determine if backlash needs adjusting.

I think I and most others misunderstood what he was asking. You provided correct information.

Based on your post you may be better off having someone else do it. It has to be done correctly or it will quickly fail.
Front to back sidewall is bearing preload totally different.
