1999 Avenger - Timing belt question.

I just bought a 1999 Avenger used with 70k miles. Its suggested you get the timing belt changed every 60k miles. We have no history on the car, but going on the condition of the car before I fixed it up (rusted out brakes, and three dry-rotted tires) Im assuming that it sat somewhere for awhile either in an auction place or possibly taken by a bank or whatnot. Since its going to cost me $500 to replace - question is, how often do the belts give out at 60k (or close to it)? When is a realistic time to get it changed? I know that if it goes while Im driving it can do some serious damage to my engine and car, but at the moment I dont have $500 to spend on a new belt if it really is just a precautionary thing.

Thanks!

Is the belt cracking, making noise? I would say just change it, better safe than sorry, but if someone told you it would cost $500 to replace a belt, their nuts. Welcome to Dodgetalk! :)

Belt sounds fine to me... then again the brakes felt and sounded fine to me too - but they were almost completely rusted out. As for the price - the guy at STS said they couldnt change it and only a dealership could... we went to a dodge dealership and the guy said $500... And thanks!

Ok, impossible, No belt should cost $500 to replace, driving to IL and having me change it is cheaper than that :) haha

Yeah well now Im hoping he was wrong... Im broke now. Buying this car was kinda a spur of the moment decision. I love it to pieces, but its sucked my funds dry. Im in debt to my mother for the tires and alignment. The man said that in order to just see it they had to take apart the entire front of the engine, and at that point they had might as well change it. *shrugs* Maybe Ill ask another dealership... Eitherway, the car is mine now. Heh, I made the down payment yesterday, and its in the shop today! Hopefully Ill be picking it up tomorrow!

Well thats cool that your mom is helping you out, I remember when I got my Ram, back when i was 21, it wasn't easy for me early on, moms are good like that :) Unless I'm wrong, belts are usually a pretty easy maintance thing to fix. Congrats on the new car! :)

Hmmm....500 is steep, but I wouldnt go as far as to say its a rip off. You can probably find a place to do it for less. Front wheel drive timing belts are a pain on front wheel cars. In our trucks we just have to pull out the fan and shroud and we have all kinds of room to get at the timing chain.

Oh...and about the money thing....get used to it! Love affairs with your ride are costly! ;)

Yeah... @_@ Speakin of cash - I need to go get a new job. With what I make now during the school year, I cant afford my insurance and gas (I make about $230 a month - insurance is $178.50) let alone any sort of social life, repairs, or college fund. I think Im going to go run to another dode dealership and ask them as well... couldnt hurt...

Ah, that explains a lot. I didnt notice you went to a dealer for that price. Try a few local shops. Ask you friends and fam where they have gone and if the shop was any good. Should be a bit less than what the deal will charge.

Where do you work now?
