I have a '04 QC 4x4 4.7 with 3.55 gears. My current tize size are 245/70-17. I was thinking of going with 285/65 or 70-17. How much lug will there be on the drivetrain? I know to go with taller gears I would need to swap out the carrier to handle it. So I guess what I'm asking is how big a tire can I go with without causing too much lug?

Thanks

Neither of those tire sizes are significantly taller than what you have now, but with the 4.7 and 3.55 you probably lug quite a bit now. The 285/70/17s are about 2 inches taller than what you have now and will be like changing you 3.55s to 3.33s.

I have the 265/70/17s, which are about identical in size to the 285/65/17, and 3.55s and mine doesn't downshift on most hills with the cruise on, but I have the 5.7.

Here is a link to an Excel calculator you can use to help determine several factors for changing tires/gears.

Would increasing the HP a little help offset any lugging that might occur?
